    Nice run.

The numbers are heading the right direction even considering the trip. That is a good thing.

    Tuesday 182.8 lbs @ 23.3% BF (42.6 fat) / BS AVG ???
    Wednesday 184.4 lbs @ 23.6% BF (43.5 fat) / BS AVG ???
    Thursday 179.8 lbs @ 24.0% BF (43.1 fat) / BS AVG ???
    Friday 177.0 lbs @ 22.6% BF (40.0 fat) / BS AVG ???

Well, it seems one good way to lose a bunch of weight in a week it to get really, really sick... like can't do anything but sleep for days at a time, which means not eating anything or drinking anything or doing any exercise at all. This came on Tuesday morning, and finally let up this morning, so I've been down for three days... the longest and most severe illness I have had in ten years or so. Fortunately, I only missed one day of work, but now we're at the weekend, so I hope to catch up on everything that didn't get done since last Friday when I was packing for my trip to Ohio.

Speaking of which... I promise will will post a wrap-up of the Arnold at some point before Monday...

Starting to get rehydrated... drank almost a gallon of green tea yesterday, and barely pissed. Gonna work on getting a full day of clean nutrition in for the first time in over a week. I haven't been checking my blood sugar while I was sick, as I know it will be wacky due to everything else going on in my system.

So about the Arnold... I ended up leaving on Friday night/Saturday morning around 1am (after taking a caffeine nap... I've not done that before, but it seemed to work well) and made it out as far as Western Pennsylvania before stopping for another coffee and twenty minutes of shut-eye in a Turnpike rest area. From there, it was a nice ride into Ohio (going through some very familiar country, as I went to college in the Northern panhandle of West Virginia and went within about ten miles of my alma mater). When I hit downtown Columbus, I expected to be able to park in a garage at the Convention Center, but they were all full, so I started to look for a lot. Within a block or two I found one that was starting to fill up, and I followed the line of traffic into the entrance. After parking and getting my stuff together for the day, I went to the kiosk to pay (which had a long line) and found that it was out of order... so free parking for the win.

Once I got inside, I was immediately overwhelmed at the size of the crowds jammed into a small building. But I found my way to the press room and picked up my tickets and passes. Since I would be getting free admission to the Expo on Sunday as a result of doing the race, I used one of my wristbands and sold the other one to someone who was waiting in line (at a discount). And after a quick security pat-down/bag check, I was in to the big room... and immediately stopped once inside the door. Not that I was taking it all in... I just couldn't move. It was SO packed with people that it was almost impossible to navigate. Within fifteen minutes of really not getting anywhere (let alone being able to get close to a booth) I really second guessed my decision to come. I mean... people were waiting in lines of over a half hour just to get a piece of a cookie or a packet of some intra-workout-type-shit.

Anyway, I realized I needed to clear my head (did I mention how loud it was, or that I had now been basically awake for over twenty-four hours) and went back outside the building and took a walk around the circumference of the Convention Center. On my sojourn, I came across the statue of Arnold which is outside the building. Bradley Martyn was holding court nearby (you can see that in the beginning of his "Day One" YouTube video), but I was able to grab a quick selfie. Note: the only way I was able to get this pic without a huge crowd in the background was to carefully position myself at an angle where there was no one waiting in line, and then timing it just right as one person was leaving but before another got up there to take their shot.

So anyway... after I headed back inside (and literally bumped into Mike O'Hearn as I went through the doorway), I started to try and check off some of the things on my list... first being to meet Franco. He was supposed to be at his booth from 11-1 and then 3-5, but when I got there around 11:30, the sign had been changed to read only 2-4, so I went on to the next person I wanted to meet... Branch Warren, who was at the Black Skull Nutrition booth. I got a lot of samples from that company at the Olympia (and some great swag), so I was surprised that the line was fairly short, and Branch was in good spirits and not only posed for a photo but also signed a brochure for me. BTW... I'm not sure he realized it, but the way his head (in a skull cap) is positioned in front of the logo on the backdrop, it looks like he's actually the devil... or wearing one of those pussy hats.

After that, I went back to Franco's booth, which happened to be right next to the main stage, where the amateur bodybuilding competition was being held, so I got to see some of that while I waited in line. This was also the closest I got to Arnold in a non-structured situation (more on that later).

I posted the pics with Franco, and he was very cool and funny to talk to... but he was "selling" his autograph (on various posters and photos he had at the ready) so after the photos, I thanked him for his time and wandered around the Expo for another half hour or so, but by then I was pretty beat and had other things on my agenda (BTW... I walked out of the building right behind Phil Heath and his wife, who was going un-noticed as he departed). Since I had done my homework and knew that there was a casino about fifteen minutes away, I drove out there and had a cigar while I played video poker and took some of their money. Then it was off to the hotel for a shower and a couple hours of sleep.

I had tickets for the "after-party" for the actual pro bodybuilding show, so I got up and headed back to the Convention Center. This proved to be a waste of time... it was basically a seminar room that had been "converted" into a nightclub, with a band and pole dancers (which was one of the hundreds of events in the Arnold Sports Festival) and a couple bars with overpriced drinks (a beer was $7), and a bunch of people milling around, all looking like they were waiting for something to happen, but knowing that nothing would. Five minutes after I arrived, I was out the door (right behind Branch and his wife). Besides... I had a big day coming up.

    180.6 lbs @ 23.6% BF (42.6 fat) / BS AVG ?

My initial goal was to be 182.5 @ 22.5% today... so I missed that mark.
My revised goal was to be an average of 184 @ 23% for the week.
My actual results were 181.1 @ 23.1%... so I got that one

My blood sugar goal remains to be an average of 175 with as little medication as possible.
Because of my illness and travel, I did not track my blood sugar on a regular basis, but when I did, it was high.

I'm still recovering, but I am at like 95% now, with just an occassional cough. I am resuming all scheduled activities tomorrow.

    Arnold Classic Wrap-Up... Day Two

Despite the cold, I put on the kilt and headed back to the Convention Center on Sunday morning for the race, and was very pleased to find that for the $40 entry fee, I was given a nice full-color t-shirt with the Arnold Sports Festival logo as well as a wristband for the Expo that day. While I was waiting for the race to start, the local news people came over and interviewed me (surely because of my outfit), but I checked their website later and I don't think it actually aired. The race itself was nice... a little more terrain that I am used to at this point (remember, I run on a dead flat course at sea level on a regular basis) but nothing I couldn't handle, and I latched onto a group of runners who kept me pushing the pace until the end. To top it off, we were also given a really cool Arnold Classic 5k finishers medal.

After that, I went into the mens room and took a "towel shower" and changed before heading to the ballroom for the Sunday Seminar with Arnold. This was absolutely a highlight of the trip, as being in the audience (10th row) while he interviewed the winner (Cedric McMillan) and then told stories about the old days of bodybuilding was something I never thought I would hear. To make it even better, he invited Franco up from the audience and they both shared tales from back in the golden years. After this event, I went back down to the Expo and tried to get to as many booths as possible (the crowds were much more manageable on Sunday). The companies seemed a little looser with the swag as the day went on as well, and I ended up with some cool stuff to bring home.

I had planned on leaving around 3pm, and as I was making my last rounds, a did a double take... it was Kai Greene at his company's booth, doing a meet and greet! I immediately jumped into line, and after about 45 minutes, it was finally my turn. I can't tell you how excited I was to talk to him, and he was just as kind and thoughtful and friendly as you would imagine. He even asked me about the medal from the race, and seemed genuinely interested in holding a conversation with me, not just "OK, shake hands, pose for pic, next person please." Here are those pics...

What was the time frame for when you got sick. Was it at the Arnold, or after you returned? Sounds like you had a good trip.

    180.2 lbs @ 24.1% BF (43.3 fat) / BS AVG ???

After I got back. I started getting sick on Tuesday morning, with only a cough at this point. It got progressively worst throughout the day and night on Tuesday, but I was still functional (in fact, I went to a concert on Tuesday night with my wife). I couldn't wake up on Wednesday, and slept through most of the day and then straight through the night with waves of fever, body aches, and chills. By Thursday most of that had subsided, but the lethargy and lack of appetite stayed on... surprisingly, the cough was better into Friday, when it returned with the stuffy/runny nose thing. I felt decent on Saturday, but still didn't have much energy, Yesterday was mostly just the cough and nose, and so far today, just the cough remains.

I'm still struggling with this illness... the cough is now a wet and productive cough, but it's persistent... so as such, I have not done anything other than exist... no dedicated nutrition (just not hungry), no planned exercise (even my daily pushups have not been done), and no regular tracking of my blood sugar. Frankly, I'm a little tired of this malaise, and I think that tomorrow I will force myself to at least eat (and drink) thoughtfully, and force myself to do at least some pushups and try and get back on track.

Sorry to hear that the sickness is still lingering, but that was a great round-up of the Arnold Classic. I'm jealous that you got to meet Kai Greene. :dreamy:

I'm also astonished at how short those guys are.

Ugh... still suffering here. No progress yesterday with getting active, or even eating and drinking normally. Fortunately, I'm not backsliding much either, but a week with no progress is a week further away from reaching my goals, and my vacation is not going to wait for me to get into shape.

Meeting Kai was absolutely the highlight of the weekend... I can't put into words just how NICE he was.

As far as the average height of bodybuilders, I agree that many are genuinely smaller men... which is why when you meet one who is actually "normal" height, it's even more striking. For example, Jay Cutler is a big guy... which is why he looks so massive, even to this day.

Last year, I finished in 192,XXX place in the ESPN Tournament bracket, with a 99% success rate in picking the games.

This year, I'm already out of it. Thanks, Terps. :bang:

Quick check in... haven't been doing much on any of the fitness/nutrition front (actually, doing nothing) and slowly gaining back body fat and scale weight. But I'm getting back to it today... just finished up meal prep, and planning to do some kind of activity as well.

I'm happy to announce here (before it's posted anywhere else) that #1 Son has accepted an offer (along with a very large scholarship) to Franklin and Marshall College... so that process is now complete. We're going out there next Friday to scope out the dorms and raid the clothing racks at the bookstore.
