I am not a natural runner, but I would like to get better.

I am challenging anyone, who is also not a natural runner, for most miles in January! I am going to run a couple of 5ks and some 10ks this year and I need a push to log the miles!!

Well I will just challenge myself!!!

I normally run around 20 miles a month - not very much - I like to lift weights too much.

I am trying for 40 miles this month.

    I ran 5 miles today.

Okay, I really wanted to do this as soon as I read it because I have gained an unacceptable amount of body fat since I started my job about 18 mos. ago. I work a desk job in an office where there seems to be a constant stream of pastries, cookies, birthday cakes and other means of face-stuffing and I have definitely shovelled in my share. My body fat was a very healthy 17% when I started and now has reached 24% at last reading. Our trainer at the gym says this is still within a healthy range for me, but I don't feel good at this level and I know my metabolism needs a bit of a kickstart. But, I now leave for work in the dark and return when it's almost dark, so most of my running will have to be on the treadmill (boring!). That said, I hereby join in the challenge and as long as I lose (fat, that is), I'll win, right?

    I did 3 miles today.

I did 5 miles today. The last mile was tough and my throat hurts a bit because it was pretty cold this morning, but the fact that I knew I was going to post here drove me on. Also, it was great to run outside and who knows how many more opportunities I'll have in the winter?
    Anyway, that's a grand total of 8.

I'm in. I ran four on 1/1 and will do another three or four today.

Update: +4 today...total of 8 for the month!

i am definately not a natural runner. my first mile run i weighed about 250...many years ago. ups and downs, injuries, etc...i still run. so i've done 18 miles since the 1st this year. so...are we going to do the math like on push ups?...or just post each run or each week with a total? i'm good however we do it...since the pretext was the non-natural runner. this is exactly what i am.

I'm the king of the non-natural runner. I did my first (and only so far) 5k about 20 months ago and I had to sprint to beat a 58 year old woman. I beat her though...by 3 seconds!

Oh yeah, I was 31 years old.

lol - ya'll are too funny - however you want to calculate sounds good to me (though I am not quite sure what you mean??:o) - but if you have already done 18 miles I have some catching up to do!!!

I will get 3 or 4 miles in this afternoon (after my leg workout - ugh)

i was thinking of a running combined total like the push up thread. if we want individual, i guess we could do that too. as a group so far it looks like

    sp 8.5
    im 10
    husker 8
    pmc 18

    so total is 44.5

then i ran 3 this morning so i would make a new entry like this:

    44.5 + 3 = 47.5

then as we each run, you just make a post and add it to make a new total. that doesnt address the individual totals though. i don't keep totals because it messes me up to do that. i think about running three or four days a week, each run based on how things are holding together in my back and knees. the pushup thread was to do a million push ups. we can't do a million miles but we may do thousands in a year? it also removes the individual competitive element and makes it a group thing...so you don't have to catch up to 18...you have to add on to 47.5 :tucool: but i don't want to discourage anyone from the personal totals so i'm open to anything, this was just an idea.

    Tired Puppy

+4 miles tonight on about 3.5 hours of sleep last night. Soooo tired.

    That makes 12 personal miles

    Thread miles: 47.5 + 4 = 51.5 miles

Sounds like a great idea - especially since I don't always run - I do alot of weights and the stairclimber - but since this is January Mileage we can set a goal and then in February try to set a higher goal?? I think we could do 200 - 250 miles this month - what do you think?

    Ran 2.5 miles this morning

    51.5 + 2.5 = 54 miles
