Do you have any gourd birdhouses like this?
    100_3578.jpg

We have a couple that my grandfather made and it's so fun to watch them build their nest's in there! How does the dog (I think its Loki right?) do with the squirrels? Our dog sits and watches from the window all the squirrels in the yard and the occasional deer that roam by. He doesn't bark but he makes this noise thats says "excuse me but thats MY yard!!"

Kree, it's so funny that you posted this! Just yesterday Lisa and were sitting out back chatting and we said, "You know the one glaring omission is back here? We don't have any bird houses!"

The gourd bird houses are a great idea. We're going to get several different kinds and put them all through our two large live oaks. Thanks! :)

There was a time when Loki chased even birds that dared to fly high over his backyard, but these days he doesn't seem to be very interested in the birds or squirrels. He also completely ignores the toads and lizards. Like most of us, Loki has mellowed in his old age. :)

If Loki happens to come across a bird or squirrel directly in his path he might give a halfhearted "woof!" and take a few fast steps in that direction, but you can almost hear him think, "Ah, screw it..." and he breaks off the "attack".

So yeah, for the most part Loki seems very comfortable sharing his yard with all the critters out there now.

I've been out back working with Lisa this morning. Couple of photos.

I manged to ruin what would have been a great action shot of two mocking birds chasing a red shouldered hawk away from their nest.

Canon EOS 60D with the Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM IF.

We've got three varieties of tomatoes this year. The Roma tomatoes (foreground) were a little slow getting started, but once I increased fertilization frequency they just exploded and are doing really well!

Like I said, crows are smart. This is the first crow I've seen who figured out how to get nuts out of the squirrel feeder. One of the squirrels was up in the tree above, and she did not look pleased.

Apparently Loki is not the only animal around here that enjoys popcorn. :)

This squirrel grabbed a nut from the feeder, quickly ran along the fence and then leapt into our neighbor's oak tree.

Thanks, K3v! I was pretty happy with the composition, but from a technical standpoint I felt the photo was fairly weak. I blame my lens. :D

Right after finishing up 6 hours of very hot and dirty yard work, I walked out back and was instantly reminded why it's all worth it. This is the first time I've seen this pair of cardinals cooling off in the falls at the same time!

A Tufted Titmouse grabbing a peanut I'd just shelled for her. I tried holding it out in my hand, but we're not quite at that level of trust yet.

Loki doing some lokin-investigating in the back yard. He looks pretty darn good for a 16.5 year old dog, and he can still run fast when there's food involved. :dreamy:
