This journal will serve as dumping grounds for my random (mostly non-fitness) photographs. My fitness photo journal can be found here.

The camera: Canon EOS 60D - shown here with the Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM IF lens.

I also use a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens.

For photo editing and cataloging I use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.3 and Adobe Photoshop CS5.

I've also started work on a new web site, www.johnspond.com. It's not live yet, but once it is there will be lots of information on backyard ponds, the critters that live in and among it and the plant life in and around it. Lots of photography, information and video. I plan to update the site often. Not as much as JSF, but a few times per week at least. Not sure how long it will take me to get things up and running. I'll post updates as work on the new site progresses.

Pond Sunrise. I used a different technique than the last sunrise photo. For this one I first tried underexposing the image using the camera's exposure compensation, but I found that I got the best results by using a very fast shutter speed with high light sensitivity. Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM IF lens. 1/2500 sec @ f/3.5, ISO 100, 18mm.

So much to learn, but it's fun. At least anyone learning today has the advantage of digital; back in the day it cost a fortune to buy and process film.

Yes, he is! Me? Not so much...

    B&W self-portrait. The Canon EF50mm f/1.8 II lens sure is unforgiving with close-ups. 1/800 sec @ f/3.2, ISO 6400, 50mm.

Great looking photos John! I'm an old Canon user myself (40D and 50D) with an arsenal of lenses. Just bought my new travel lens (Tamron 18-270) for use on my trip.

    A couple of suggestions.

Is there a thread here for folks to post comments about photography, equipment, etc.? I know this isn't a photography site, but it seems like we've got some users here who are into it.

Also, are you shooting JPEG or Raw? I switched over a couple of years ago and what a difference.

If you don't have it already, I'd suggest Lightroom. Its a great program by Adobe designed the ground up for photographers. I've been using it for over a year and even teach some classes in it, although I'm learning new stuff every day with it.

If you want to have some real fun, try an HDR program like Photomatix.

Looking forward to seeing more of your shots. I agree with Paddy, the dumbbell shot is frame-worthy. Artistic b/w shots make great prints.

Here's an example of a photo of some kayaks I took last year in Salida, CO. I was walking around and saw these stacked up in alleyway. The first is the regular HDR photo. The second is one I manipulated in Photomatix to give it a watercolor look.

I've been wanting to get the 50mm 1.8 since I've heard great things about it. I have the Canon XSi with a Canon 17-85mm lens but I haven't used much at all since moving to KC. Maybe I should start trying to take pictures of some of the amazing fountains they have here.

There's not a dedicated forum for general photography, however the Media Gallery forum is perfect for pictures. Discussions specifically about photography and equipment should probably go in the Off Topic forum, but if they bleed into this forum that's fine, too.

I shoot raw only. The difference when it comes to editing is incredible!

I use Lightroom and CS5 for editing (I mentioned this in the first post :)). I just started using Lightroom this past week and it is AWESOME!!!

I'll look into that one, thanks!

Dude, I love these!! Beautiful shots.

It's amazing how good it is for about hundred bucks. You won't regret getting it!
