when starting a fat loss regime -- what kind of calorie deficit do you start with?

i.e. BMR (not counting activity modifier) - x = calorie goal?

    or

BMR + activity modifier -x = calorie goal?

or do you calculate BMR with your desired weight?

So her goal is to lose slightly more than 3 pounds each week? That is fairly aggressive, and may have her dropping more lean weight than she needs to in the process.

    i agree.
500-1000 below maintenance level. otherwise she'll not only be losing muscle tissue but be tired and have difficulty going 100% into every workout. besides, i suppose i'd be cranky all the time and start hating the whole thing. if she's on an exercise program she should eat properly, not starve herself. sure, it's possible and all that, but not very healthy, nor pleasurable in any way, i think.
    EDIT: http://www.calculator.net/calorie-calculator.html
