I prefer to eat carbs earlier in the day and have later meals involve more fat and protein.

There is nothing wrong with carbs later in the day and even before bed. You would just benefit from choosing slower digesting, complex carbs as bed time approaches. A mix of protein, healthy fats and complex carbs as a final meal goes a long way to preserving/building muscle during your "fast" overnight.

Depends on a lot of factors, but I for one have never had problems with carbs right before bed, and when I train at night I often have a lot of carbs before bed.

It depends on a lot of things... but IMHO at your age this isn't something you should be overly concerned about.
