Bringing this on back from the dead

Anyone out there working on 225# on their way up? On Stronglifts 5x5 as a base for an assault on a 1000# PL series, so 225 bench is not only a longtime goal (never joined the club in High School) and part of the 1000# series.

Today: 5x100 as part of workout focusing on Critical Bench and SL technique tips. Easy with pretty strict form-one set bar contact to chest was sloppy, rest were grooved.

Thats really Fast:tu: was this the 1st time you broke the 225 or have you done it previously ?
How did you train the bench ? how often reps/sets scheme? and what accesory work ? were you in a calorie surplus?
Sorry for all the questions :D !!

last time i worked out at all was in early 2005 -- i hit 245 bench -- since then i had not hit the gym or done any exercising at all until june 2011 -- when i got back in the gym i felt like a big ol' sissy (i think 6 years of being a slug counts as starting again with nothing)

i started with a p.o.s. routine and started posting here and was guided to the 5x5 starting strength routines and modified it to fit my needs. i alternated between BB and DB whenever i did chest.

    Workout A
    5x5 deadlift or cleans
5x5 flat bench (alternate BB and DB)
5x5 dips (if body weight is too easy - add weights)

    5x5 rows
    5x5 tricep extensions

    Workout B

    5x5 squats
5x5 pull ups (if body weight is too easy - add weights)
5x5 incline bench (alternate BB and DB)
    5x5 seated military press
    5x5 biceps

    ----------------------------

    then i switched to a 3-day split

    chest/triceps
    back/biceps
    legs/shoulders

    ----------------------------

i was in calorie maintenance mode .. in the past 11 months i have not gained or lost a significant amount of weight.

    i started at 220 pounds @ 30% BF -- my lowest was 203 and my highest was 225 ... i am currently at 220 pounds @ 18-20% BF

if you want to lift heavy - you have to train heavy

Wow, that's a pretty heavy volume lifting if you're pushing the poundages, but it worked great for you-congrats :claplow:

I'm on the basic SL 5x5 and messed up rushing today due to folks using power rack and benches for curls (grrr). Loaded 100 instead of 110 and was thinking "Boy this is even easier than I expected" only to get p'd off unloading bar. So aggression during bent rows may have been foolish!

But getting form down and ready to see what max is in a couple of weeks. Guessing in the 165 range or more, all-time max was 212.

it is hard to get back once you lose it -- good luck with the SL 5x5 routine -- it is definitely taxing but what you can accomplish on it is pretty amazing

i try to adjust the pounds to hit failure on reps

i was home on vacation from mi-jan to mid-feb with no lifting and got back and got sick for 2 weeks (total 6 weeks of no lifting) -- my 1 rep max dropped to 225 -- i just now got it back to 245

i eventually want to be able to do working sets with 225

I'm in on this one; never done 225 without a spot. I don't know my max right now as I strained a pec a week ago but I'm guessing it's 205-210.

Got 165 fairly easily today and stopped since it was my third "max" attempt and I wanted to leave something in the tank for Deadlifts.

Working on "Critical Bench" form too.

    Got it today, 4/27/12!

Form wasn't great at all but my right pec still isn't 100%, so I'll take what I can get.

I'll jump in on this. I'm hoping for 200 by the end of the year, so why not go ahead and shoot for 225 :D My "ending" bench goal is 230-240 - I want to be able to get some national records :D

Bur - you and I are at about the same strength level. I can do 2x2x155 for sure, but I really think I'm at about 165 for a max (although I'm hoping it's 175 - I'll find out Saturday).

Awesome! I still haven't hit 165 (even though I think I can), but sounds like you'll be right there with me :) Glad you're in on it :)
