Default Alterrnate X for lunges

I've been getting into forward DB lunges for the last month or so, alternating them with BB squats. For the last couple of weeks the next 4-5 days my left hip is killing me. Can you tell me a good alternative to the lunges, that will work the same muscle groups? Thanks.

Most people have tight hip flexors, which could lead to pain as a result of doing lunges. Try searching for some stretches and dynamic warmups you can do before your lunges and see if that fixes it.

If you do wind up sticking with using lunges, using MT77's suggestions, I'd suggest this: rather than stepping forward to lunge, bring one leg backward instead. The target position is the same as the forward stepping lunge; you just get there by using a less knee-stressing movement.
