OK... so I've fallen off the wagon

Here's the good news though... there are 9 weeks left to the beginning of June. I am giving my word to everyone here (and to myself) that the next 9 weeks will be 100% discipline

It's go time!

Hang in there BJ! The only day you can control is today and the only meal you can control is the one you are putting in your mouth. Imagine you are at the plate. Don't worry about the next pitch or the previous one. Worry about the one coming at you right now as it demands immediate attention. (Note: i am saying this to myself as well!)

I'm right with yah. I missed my power workout for the UD 2.0 this weekend which basically killed the diet for me.

Back on the wagon again today with the low carb high protein. Making sure I hit the gym for all days this week as well.

No more excuses.

Thanks guys!

1 day down... 64 to go!

There is a 3 day work trip in there and a 3 day leadership convention... two times that will definitely be difficult, but I'm all about discipline right now. (oh, and countless birthday parties)

Regarding the work trip, I know what you mean there. I spend a lot of time on the road myself.

If you can handle the grief you might get from travel partners, don't be afraid to tell the restaurant exactly what you want. Every restaurant can make an 8oz chicken breast (or salmon, or tuna), barely brushed with olive oil and a tiny bit of salt. If you can summon the willpower they can make you what you need. I try to do that myself although, admittedly, sometimes it is hard when traveling with clients to make a restaurant run in circles for you.

Good input! I'm actually thinking that I'm going to take a lot of food with me. Eliminate the free hotel breakfast (which is always either loaded with carbs or loaded with fat... you choose) and possibly dinner from the mix... we'll see

I fasted yesterday... up until evening anyway. Then I had the 3 bites of chicken that Michelle didn't want and a protein shake just before bed.

The egg sandwich this morning was especially good! I love how I feel in the morning the day after a fast... always clear headed.

Tried some P28 bread that Michelle bought... it was OK, not really good (too dense) and not really bad (had decent flavor). Interesting though - 14g of protein per slice.

OK... so starts day 64 of the countdown to June 1

depletion workout in... was only able to get through one cycle of 3 sets of 15 reps... was totally wiped out. Didn't even attempt the second cycle.

I intend to follow the UD2.0 protocol, but don't think that I'll carb load this weekend - I'm thinking depletion workouts today, tomorrow, and Friday then a long bike ride over the weekend for this week. Stay under 50g of carbs through the whole time until next week Friday (Apr 8th) for the first carb load.

Good luck with your new goals BJ. Have you tried the diet where you eat one Oreo cookie per hour with 4oz of skim milk and run a marathon every week? I hear that works good too.

I'm not sure how to take that But you made me laugh

Admittedly, I have a hard time sticking to anything I am going to stick with Lyle's Ultimate Diet through this time period. Trying to keep too many of my own tweaks out of it. I do want to get back to the 5/3/1 and build more strength, but think that I'll wait until Fall... when I can not worry so much about putting on some fat.

I'm thinking that my year is going to be set up something like maintenance during the warm months, bulking in the fall, and cutting in the late winter. We'll see... besides, it's a long journey to getting a good physique.

Anyway, thanks Matt... I've been checking on your journal from time to time you are a beast!

You should do whatever works for you.

Personally, I've lost 19 pounds since December and until this week have PRed on my BSQ, bench, DL, and OHP every fourth week for 24 weeks using 5/3/1: fat loss and strength gain at the same time. They are not necessarily mutually exclusive. I'm not losing fat as fast as I can imagine losing it but the balance is working well for me. My plan is to keep the slow and steady weight loss through the summer and then focus more intensively on strength this fall.

If you want to go get strong, go get strong. You don't have to stop your fat loss to do it.

OK... now that we are going down this road... I know my failure points... conveyed by a few quotes that I know

1) Most men fail because of broken focus
Anyone who has followed my journal knows that I change routines like most people change underwear. There are reasons for this, none necessarily good. My main reason is because I want to understand the game by first hand experience... and I'm a constant tweaker.

2) Begin with the end in mind
Here's another one... I have no single goal I'm running after. Ultimately, I want to be around 170 to 180, lean, and muscular. However, I tend to frequently go off in separate directions to get there. Bulk for a while and get over-fat... cut hard to make up and lose muscle. Ultimately, I want also to be in great cardiovascular shape. I guess my ultimate picture would be in about the same shape as what I would picture a Marine being after basic training.... strong, yes - but not the main focus... high endurance, yes - but not the main focus... ripped, yes - but not the main focus

3) Good is the enemy of great
Overall, I am pretty happy right now with where I'm at. If I could drop a few inches of fat from around my gut I'd be content. So - I don't have enough motivation to push too hard outside of my comfort zone.

4) Keep the main thing the main thing
This isn't an area of failure, but an area of truth. Being physically fit is not the most important thing in life right now. It is important, but so are all of the other F's (Family, Friendship, Freedom, Finances, Following, Fun, Faith, Fitness). As you can see... fitness is just one part of the 8 Fs. So... back to my picture of being as fit as a Marine out of basic training... I obviously don't have the same amount of time to dedicate.

Ultimately... I'll keep trying new things and tweaking. I am getting closer to figuring out what works for my body and what doesn't. In the mean time, I enjoy the science experiment!

Heh, yeah I was just being funny - not judging your goals or approach at all. I only know one training philosophy and have been on a "bulk" for a couple years now. But we each have different goals, and different outside pressures that dictate how and when we train.

Well said BJ. Even if jumping around from plan to plan isn't consistent, you can be consistant and not reach your goals if you only follow a plan half-assed. Or even if teh plan is followed through but it's not the right plan for you. In sum keep it up and stay strong.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I don't feel like my time has been a failure... I've learned a lot about my body and how it responds (and how my willpower and emotions respond). All in all, I think that the past year of experimentation has led to a great understanding of what works and what doesn't. I will use this knowledge going forward to do the best I can do for attainment of my goals!

I think you can definitely accomplish your goals if you stick with UD 2.0. The plan can be tweaked to maintain (or even gain a little once you get there). We all have times in our life when we can;t adhere as well as we want, but its our ability to carry on and stay dedicated during and after those times that shape us.

I am a perfect example. I posted on Monday that I was going to crush this UD 2.0 plan. Well, what happened? My wife delivered our baby Monday night, a week and a half ahead of schedule. I haven't been able to work out and my diet hasn't been great, but I am loving life with my wife and my new daughter right now. We will be heading home soon and I will be facing a whole new set of challenges. Sleep deprivation, a bevy of meals delivered to us (why does everyone make lasagna and dessert), catching up with work, etc. My ability to overcome these challenges and stick with the plan will define what kind of results I get from the diet. Everything I listed above is a legitmate reason to deviate from the diet, but that doesn't mean I should. We will always have reasons to deviate or start a new program (I do this all the time as well).

I am going to stick with UD 2.0 and I challenge you too as well. Lets see what kind of results we can get with sticking with a program
