This One's For the Girls: Why the Scale Doesn't Tell the Whole Story
The title is a little misleading, because not only women can profit from this thread. However, I think that women tend to get hung up on what the scale says more easily than men do and they often tend to be intimidated by training with heavy weights and building muscle, so I'm posting this primarily for female JSF newcomers.
We always tell beginners to use other methods in addition to the scale to track their progress. In the spirit of "a picture's worth a thousand words," here's why:
I urge everyone (male or female) to help add visual evidence to this thread by posting side-by-side comparisons of themselves at the same bodyweight but with a different body composition.

Wow, Christy--absolutely amazing example of body re-composition!
This is an awesome thread idea. I am going to feature this thread in my update this morning. Some people get way too wrapped up in the number shown on the scale (and I happen to believe this practice is as prevalent with men as it is with women). I think your thread is going to go a long way towards helping folks overcome that.
I have taken so many pictures over the years that I can contribute my own examples.

Nice thread! It's almost making me want to pick up on my bulk where I left off. I don't have pictures of myself at the same weight with different body fat percentages, but here's Trinity, who used to post here ages ago, with about a half a pound weight difference between pics, in three months of changes: http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/s...ead.php?t=3324
I looked back at my progress pictures, and I realized that weight has been such an insignificant marker in my body changes, that I haven't actually been recording measurements and storing it for reference. So I'll try and guess from memory. First pic I was 123, second pic would have been about 115, third pic around 120 maybe, and last pic at 118. I liked the look of my lower body in the second progress pic, but my upper body was so frighteningly thin that I was much more comfortable adding that extra three pounds of lean body mass. Three pounds can make a big difference.
I can never remember how to attach a photo that I've previously uploaded to a current post, so I'll have to just link to my journal.

Wow.
I think checking the scale weight when 200lbs is a good incentive no? Each day I would get on the scale and want to be a lower weight than yesterday, making me want to put in more effort that day and reminding me to stay focused.
Measurements and BF% readings are the way forward...

i am bulking and just hit my "fat picture" weight of 140.
here are a couple shots of before/after at the same weight (140 lbs).
i don't necessarily like how i look now at 140.... but i'll admit its a hell of a lot better than the last time i was this weight!!
time to cut!!

J_W, awesome thread and awesome work by all of you!
I was just having a conversation yesterday about this very topic. It amazed me that at 139 lbs 3 weeks ago my old clothes didn't fit, but now at 139 lbs, I'm starting to get into old clothes. It perplexed me, but now I can put a word with it - re-composition.
You all always amaze me.

Awesome thread, amazing composition changes. This evidence really proves that we shouldnt rely on scale weight readings alone.

I didn't really think I had anything to compare at the same weight. But here is 180 pounds, separated by 3.5 years of fairly steady lifting.

slightly different angle and different pose, but they are roughly the same scale.
