$16 in 16 minutes at the bulk food store
I love buying food. You can buy a lot of food for not very much money if you buy it in bulk.
a little more than a pound of flax seeds $1.10
a little more than a pound of oat bran $2.03
a pound of wild/brown rice mix $1.18
three quarters of a pound wheat germ $0.52
a pound of scotch oats $0.52
a little more than a pound of wheat kernels $0.87
half a pound of dates $0.94
a quarter pound of currants $0.68
three quarters of a pound of dried apricots $3.56
three quarters of a pound of cherry flavored dried cranberries $4.57
I've never bought currants or cherry flavored cranberries, but I'm sure I can stuff them in one or another of my recipes. I was going to also buy a pound of walnuts, but $7.71 sounded like a lot for them, and I changed my mind.

Ok I'm a HUGE!!! fan of dried apricots..one of my fav. foods..but how are you working them in to your diet? I know you don't count stuff, but they're just so high in sugar and they're relatively calorically dense.
What are the stats on the type you bought?

I'll soak the wheat kernels overnight, then boil them for about an hour, then add some walnuts, cinnamon, and dried fruit. Maybe I'll sweeten it with a bit of orange juice or apple juice or honey. I first got into wheat kernels from a kutya recipe that was part of a Ukrainian Christmas Eve dinner I made.
I don't know the nutrition stats of the dried apricots, but I'm not too worried about them. (The cranberries are more troublesome because they had oil listed on the ingredients in the bin.) If I decided to snack on them, I wouldn't eat more than two or three. They're mostly for my kids, but I also cut them up into tiny bits to sprinkle over my homemade granola or add to my bowl of warm oats or batch of muffins or cereal bars.
TheLemongsong, I thought you once said if you'd like to be buried in dates and have to eat your way out. Has your favorite changed?

Im going to have to look around for that then. I know I can pick up some things online but I have not seen a wide variety at one website.
