I've read that if you leave it an hour then you can still burn off calories within that hour, but I've also read that you should eat within about half an hour after a workout or you'll lose muscle. Does it depend on whether you've done weights or cardio?
Also, what sort of things should I eat after a workout?
This is, of course, a highly debated issue. Lots of sides, and opinions.
It depends on your goal, when you eat after a workout. If you are bulking, generally it's within 15-30 min of working out. Cutting, you can wait up to an hour after cardio. After weights, some people wait an hour if they're cutting, but most eat within 30 minutes after a weight session to try and halt muscleloss regardless of whether they're cutting.
Of course, there is every variation in between as well. I have known those who eat carb before the workout, and protein afterwards. Those who wait an hour after everything, and those who wait no more than 15 minutes after anything. But the above ones are the "general", and I am sure you'll get many more on your post.
A lot of it comes down to how you feel, as well as fueling your body. If you are going to feel ill or like you are going to pass out if you wait an hour - then you are causing more harm to yourself than "fat-burning good".
In general after working out, a meal which contains both protein and carb is reccomended, with a little bit of fat.
