Default No-cook Oatmeal

You're saying, "no cook???!"

Yep.

You've got a couple of ways to go with this. You can buy the slow-cook oats and have muesli, or you can buy quick-cook oats and have something in between mushy cereal and actual oatmeal.

Personally, I go both ways. Here's how it works:
  • 1 ounce Sliced Almonds from the baking aisle
  • 1/2 cup Oats, either type
  • Sweetener (I use 3 packets of Splenda, hubby uses brown sugar)
  • a few shakes of Cinnamon (I use 8 knocks on the shaker, some people like less)
  • dash Nutmeg (tiny bit from a fresh grated nutmeg is amazing!)
  • 6 ounces Milk

Or you can swap the cinnamon and nutmeg for a half tablespoon of Cocoa powder (I'm a chocoholic) but be warned that cocoa powder doesn't like mixing with watery stuff--it likes oil a lot better. I mix all the dry ingredients well before adding the milk to make it mix better.

If you like your oats soft, let them sit for a minute in the cold milk. If you like muesli (nuts and twigs), then don't wait.

You big burly guys could mix your protein powder in here without fear that it would cook into a rubbery lump (never microwave protein powder!) along with extra helpings of everything else. In the amounts above, this is a low calorie breakfast that could stand some fruit. In fact, sometimes I add dried fruit to the cinnamon version. Or you could add frozen blueberries (the milk usually thaws them fairly well if you don't add a lot) or fresh fruit of whatever variety is to hand.

This is faster than boiling water for oatmeal, and as long as your mind is ready for something chewy/crunchy instead of mushy, it tastes just as good.
