Jsf Logo Contest - Prizes! [updated Sep 22, 2005]
JSF needs a new logo! If you have the skills to create a world-class logo, then here's your chance to have your design become a permanent part of JSF history. Please read all rules carefully!!
OFFICAL RULES - UPDATED September 22, 2005
1) The logo must be a 100% original work of art created especially for JSF.
2) Design the logo keeping in mind that the logo will be used on a wide variety of background colors (the main site, the forums, letterhead, possibly other areas). All non-logo elements, such as the background, must be transparent in the final .PSD and .AI images. The JPG logo submitted for judging can be on any background color you like, or you may use a .GIF with a transparent background.
3) The winner must agree to allow JSF to Trademark the logo and allow JSF full legal ownership of the logo.
4) Contest entry logos submitted for judging should be in .JPG or .GIF format only. Images should be no more than 300x300 pixels. Keep images to less than 100KB, if possible. If using .GIF format, please make the background transparent. If using .JPG format then any background color is fine.
5) DO NOT POST ANY LOGO SUBMISIONS ON THE FORUM! Please email all submissions to john@johnstonefitness.com with a subject of "JSF Logo Contest". Be sure to include your contact information, including your JSF user name. Feel free to post any questions you have to this thread.
6) The final winning logo must be sent to me in both raster and vector formats: .PSD (Photoshop) format for raster, and .AI (Adobe Illustrator) format for vector. The raster image should be at least 640x640 pixels and at least 300dpi. If you can not supply the logo in these formats as described, do not enter the contest.
7) Each contestant may enter up to 5 logo designs, however all entries must be submitted together.
8) The contest entry deadline is September 30, 2005 at midnight.
Shortly after the entry deadline has past, I will post all submissions for judging. The logos will not be associated with their authors during the judging. The JSF community will decide the winner through private voting. Anyone can enter the contest. In order to prevent abuse, only JSF members who were registered prior to September 6, 2005 will be permitted to vote. Only one vote per user. Obviously there can only be one winner. The actual vote tally will not be publicly posted.
The contest may be cancelled if there are not a significant number of logo entries.
The winning logo will become the official JSF logo! The winner will receive: - One year Platinum membership (existing supporters will have their current membership upgraded and extended)
- JSF Coffee Mug w/ new logo
- JSF T-Shirt w/ new logo
- JSF Bumper Sticker w/ new logo
- JSF Wall Clock w/ new logo
- 10 Pounds of All The Whey Protein Powder
- $100.00
This logo has to be AWESOME. It will likely become the final logo for JSF and will live on for many, many years to come.
Good luck! Don't forget, email all submissions as described above - don't post them here. Please feel free to post any questions you may have below.

Hey John,
Great idea!
Should the logo fit in the current colour scheme? Should only the logo be created, or also the text beside it? (JohnStoneFitness.com, etc.) Any limits on the amount of logos one can submit?

May I ask why you are looking for a new logo? I'm assuming it's because the current one isn't of original work?

The original logo has somehow gotten into the public domain for use as a general logo template and is now being used by other entities/businesses on the Internet. Rather than try to cling to the old logo (which apparently was never protected legally) the decision appears to have been made to replace it altogether. I believe part of the intent of this process is also to design a logo more fitting this site's intent.

Ah, yeah I figured. That's too bad, the current logo is pretty nice looking. Oh well, good luck John

1) As stated above, you must use a transparent background. ( EDIT: transparent background for the final images only. Any background color is fine for the JPG).
2) The 300 DPI setting is for the final raster logo in Photoshop (PSD) format. When you create the file in Photoshop you have the ability to specify the DPI. The JPG sent for judging should be 72 dpi.
3) Yes.

I think Steven means it's not possible to use a transparent background in .jpg, only in .gif.
I think you mean no funky backgrounds, just plain black or white, right?

Sorry about that. Of course you are both right about the lack of transparent background support in JPG. That's what I get for posting before my coffee.
I've updated the rules above. To sum: the final images (PSD and AI) should have transparent backgrounds, but the JPG submitted for judging can be on any background color you like. I've also altered the rules to allow logos to be submitted for judging in .GIF format, if desired.

Hi John, I have a few questions:
I assume you want a vector format logo for printed materials (banners, t-shirts, etc). I was wondering, if I supply, say a mega-high res (1000x1000 pixel at least) .psd, would that be acceptable as a vector format? If not I'll try to accomodate a vector
And as well, do you want logo type on the logo (i.e "John Stone Fitness") or just a logo in itself? Or maybe even a hybrid logo like Orange County Choppers have the "OCC" worked into their logo's... would "JSF" be something you'd like?
I'm a graphics designer for hire, and the first thing I noticed was the logo here I'll give this my best shot!

Why would you create a .psd first? If you have to create a logo from scratch, which also has to function as line-art, it's easier to first create the line-art. If you want to add fancy schmancy stuff, you can always do that in Photoshop afterwards. Wouldn't you create the logo in PhotoShop with the pen tool? Illustrator has that, as well.

Don't currently have Illustrator, but I'm sure I could track down a copy if it's vital. I have very unorthadox methods, I don't even use the pen tool at all; my creations come from the Marquee Tools... takes longer but it gives me more control on the outcome. If the vector is a must, I can always convert it or just retrace.

If you only need to do one line-art conversion, you could always download the Freehand trial and use that.
Anyhow, good luck!

Yes, .AI format is required. I need something infinitely scalable.

The designer can submit up to 5 logos. The designs are 100% his/her call.
