"Ideal Weight" Opinions Needed
I've been going back to caloriesperhour.com each time I lose a big chunk of weight to see what my BMI is. I know it is a rough estimate and technically I should use calipers or real equipment but this is all i have access to here.
What I would like is some 3rd party opinions on the paragraph at the bottom of the picture (that i circled). It says that an ideal weight for a heavy framed 6'1" person is 202 lbs. Do you agree or disagree, and how can we all apply this to goals we set for ourselves? My current goal is to be 200 lbs by December- do i necessarily need to go that low?

Heavy framed means trained and muscular. Basically, are you buff or not? If you simply have big bones but no meat on them, you're not heavy framed (yet). Assuming you haven't previously been physically active and are just losing weight, yes, you need to go lower than that. As a rule of thumb, cut until you see a six-pack.
Eg: http://www.johnstonefitness.com/php/stats.php
John at Jun 17, 2003 is "lean frame", and John today is "heavy frame"

sigakoer,
I disagree with your definition of a person's frame. I think your frame stays the same as you get bigger or smaller. If The Rock lost 100 lbs, he would still have a big frame. He would just be skin and bones but still a big person.

Frame is bone size, there are tables where wrist measure can determine size. I bet you are medium frame. The Rock had to lose 20lbs off his 6'4" 240lb body to appear in movies. At the 1977 Mr. Olympia contest Frank Zane was 187, Bill Grant 184, Boyer Coe 196, Ed Corney 174. Steve Reeves was 195 in Hercules. Arnold competed mainly at 222 lbs. Point you can look good and big at lower weight.
I agree with the doctor, I have a rule of thumb, anyone under 6'3" should be below 200 lbs for best condition and health. It is rare someone can stay conditioned otherwise, not on 'roids. I bet you would like 190-195lbs.

I can understand that too much weight might be bad for your health, even if you had a low body fat level, e.g. looking at current Mr. Olympia contestants. However, I think the "ideal weight" estimates are almost as bad as BMI, because (to a reasonable extent), it doesn't really matter how much you weigh health-wise as long as you maintain a healthy body fat level. You could even say that being at a higher weight, maybe higher than these estimates allow (although not TOO much higher), could be more "ideal" if you had a low body fat percentage.
I think there should be studies done on lifespan vs. not only height and weight, but body fat percentage as well. Accurate studies using a combination of all three weights might be able to produce an "ideal height/weight/body fat" chart that would allow for maximum strength, health, and lifespan.
I guess I feel like an increased weight isn't terribly bad if it's muscle, although I could understand that excessive muscle could possibly be detrimental because it would be more taxing on your body's systems...although I unfortunately don't have anyway of determining exactly what level of muscle mass is best.

Ok so I googled the wrist measuring test to see what size frame I have and found a page with instructions. First I did the wrist test and it measured 7.5" exactly. According to the chart this is considered to be in the "big frame" category. But I wanted to make sure so I did the Elbow measure test, which was confusing at first but I figured it out. I measured 3 1/4". This confirms a "big frame" according to this chart.
Here is the site: http://www.am-i-fat.com/body_frame_size.html
I know at least one person that would be happy if i weighed 195.... And I know that when I look at my pictures of me at 195 I look pretty good. I will set my goal to 205. That is 10 lbs off of 195, still quite a challenge, and close enough to 195 to re-evaluate my diet/exercise plan.
That is interesting about the competitors' weights. I usually look at football player stats to compare myself to. most of the big time WR's and TE's are 210-230, and even some QB's are 200+ and lean.
I am a big fan of The Rock, his build is what I am trying to accomplish!

I'm 6'2, I look pretty damn thin at 190 to 200. Even if it's not all muscle, I'd say 190 to 200 with the chances of leaning down in the future when you're ready is a perfect weight.
I look like a rail at 170 to 180, and at 170 my body fat is *LOW*.
190 to 200 with some muscle is primo in my book.
FYI, tom brady is over 230 pouds and some are saying he's weighing in at 240 by now. That fool can't run for crap, has no ass and looks like a stick figure!

I dont know if it's accurate. That was the first one I saw and using both tests I measured Big Frame, so I left it at that. I know just by looking at myself, like my knee caps, and especially my legs, I have a big bones. So as opinions go I already knew I was a big frame, but I just wanted to ask on here to see what others thought about it. Some people think there is no such thing, and they may be right. But what I do know is that my bones would beat up their bones.
I think as long as you are within a reasonable weight, the wrist measurement should be accurate. There is no fat round my wrist, so I know I measured straight bone. I know for women, my mom for example, her wrist isn't "fatty" but it is not just bone. So if she were to measure it, she may get a false reading.
B231,
See what I mean? He is 230-240 (probably our height or a little more) and you would never guess!
I guess I dont want to get down to 189 lbs because when I was that weight I couldn't do the things I can do now. At my current weight, there is very few things I cant move, carry or stop, and I like that. When I was 255-260, I was strong but just too big to participate. I want to be able to have The Rock look and strength. By no means do I want to look like T.O......that is a long way off, and too much work for my lazy butt.

Forget about weight -- focus on % bodyfat. If you have less than 15% bodyfat, then you are probably at a reasonably healthy weight. Those weight recommendations are for the average person...and the average person doesn't train. If you've got lots of muscle, then the weight figures don't apply to you.

Yeah I agree with that- BF % is where the focus should be. I just wanted to see what people think about achievable weights for different sizes. That's why pro sports players weight what I do, but look much lighter, especially when they are all standing next to each other on the field or court. I'm the same weight as Tom Brady- but we dont look the same......
Definitely when I reach my weight loss goal I will switch to a BF % goal, 20% first, then 18, then 15. I am lifting weights now, so hopefully I am taking the right steps to make that easier when the time comes.
In response- I wouldn't say I have lots of muscle. I am strong, but things like my Bench, and abdominal strength are, and always have been lacking. But, that's why I'm lifting...

I'm 6'2 and weigh 230 in this picture ~> http://www.freewebs.com/briansplace/brian.htm
At this wedding I had chicks I didn't even know asking me to take picture's with them as their date.
Body fat is everything, scale weight is crap and I no longer let the number on a scale decide how I feel about myself and the way I look.
