Default Just got some Whey Protein....

Ok so my brother and his friend are overseas so they ordered some Whey Protein to my house and they said I can have one. I was looking at this and I'm not sure when to take this. My brothers friend said take it 3 times a day and I thought you just take it after a workout. Also I'm prolly going to be doing the easiest method which is using one scoop and stirring in a glass. My question is what is one scoop, a table spoon or what. I just had another knee surgery about 2 months ago so I am limited to legs, but have been doing upper body workouts. I was trying to get as big as I could before I got the ok to run and then I woulda cut down. Right now I have increased my cardio with higher intensity on the bike and walking on inclines which I do on my off days as well as with knee rehab with machines in the gym. So when do I take this stuff after every workout even my cardio/knee rehab days or just my upperbody lift days. Also are there any side effects to taking this as I have never taken supplements yet, and this won't get me fat right, I def dont want to add to my gut that I already have. Thanks

Whey protein is natural. There are no, and never will be side effects because it's just protein. However, making 3 shakes a day might be wasteful, but then again it depends on your needs. You should drink a shake before workout and after workout.

It should have a scoop inside the containter. You may have to dig around for it. Each serving usually varies from 24g-28g or so.
Instead of stirring it in a glass with a spoon, I would recommend using a blender or shaker for better results.

Whey can make you fat....if you mix your shake with ice cream

Seriously, whey is a supplement, so try to get most of your protein from "real" sources and save the whey for post work out.

What kind did you get btw?

Also should I take it on the days I'm doing cardio/knee rehab or just the days i'm doing upper body training. thanks

Depends on what you use it for.

If for a PWO only then no, you wouldn't need it on off days since there is no "Post-Workout" really. (Although I have been studying the idea of sparingly trying a PWO meal on a non-weight day, though not with as much carbs.) If you're just using it as a way to get in extra protein, maybe as a meal, then you can use it every day.

As to the amount again that depends. I use about 1 scoop of ON before working out with some carbs. Postworkout I use 2 scoops.

Yeah I guess you can say I'm using it as a meal, maybe it'll help speed up the recovery on my knee surgery if I take it after my rehab days. My thigh it nothign compared to my good leg, working at PT to get it back to full strength.

Yes I do. It amazes me how many people love ON Whey's taste. I do not doubt the quality of the protein nor how effective it is, but it tastes really bad to me.

Compared to EAS it tastes like candy though. It's unfortunate, back in the day EAS supplements were a big part of my life, and nowadays they are totally different. Myoplex tastes like garbage now. I miss Bill Phillips, haha.

What about it? It's fine to use on the off days. Just think of it like a meal, only that meal doesn't have much fat or carbs (unless you're adding other ingredients to the shake).

One thing you will learn when it comes to fitness, is that just because something works for one person, it may not work for you. For example, I have had great results lifting first thing in the morning, empty stomach and have my shake PWO. Others have a shake before and after, lift in the evening and still get good results. You have to figure out what works best for you

For non-lifting days either have whole foods or a protein blend like At Large Nutrition's Nitrean. You don't really want a whey-only protein other than post-workout. There are better options.

Your buddy is wrong.

Or he's part right.

If you're taking 3 scoops pre and 3 post then sure that's too much probably (unless you're Ron Coleman). Take a little bit pre, like maybe 1/2 scoop with some carbs, and then maybe 1-2 scoops post, and you'll be fine.

Jason/txitalian makes the best point of all - find out what works best for you.

Yeah-it's not the worst thing to have fast-acting protein if you don't want to spend the money right now on a protein blend. I think it would be best to either add carbs or fat to your Whey protein. Really, whole food would be best if possible on off days. But it's not a big isssue.

??? How is a PWO meal different from any other meal? Especially if it's one with less carbs.

Dude a PWO meal contains a lot of carbs, and a lot of simple carbs at that. For me anyway.

I think I misunderstood your question.
