Default eating before or after weight training?

Hi... this is my first post, and is a bit long, but I hope I get some good advice here. I was never really active growing up, so don't have much experience with physical training. I do know a bit about dieting though... I went from 265 lbs to 180 lbs (44" waist to a 36") a few years back by simply changing my diet to a more sensible and healthy plan. The weight was hard to keep off without much physical activity though, and when I moved home after school, I quickly went back up to about 200 lbs. I have maintained that weight for about 2 years now, but still feel "fat".

I first saw John's website on January 12th, when it was posted on Fark.com. I had been wanting to get in shape for awhile, but it was seeing his achievement that really gave me the motivation to get my own life in order. I started reading as much as I could, and am continuing to learn more everyday. I pretty much changed my lifestyle overnight, but feel confident that I am on the right track with the diet and exercise decisions I have made so far. I am down from 201.1 lbs & 30.1% BF on the 12th, to 194.8 lbs & 29.3% BF as of this morning (the 23rd).

My question is: Should I be eating before or after my workouts? Because of my schedule, I find the easiest time for me to exercise is when I get home from work (starting around 5:30 - 6:00 PM). However, I keep wondering if I should eat dinner before I workout, to get the fuel in my system, or if I should eat afterwards to replenish the energy I just used. For example, I had a protein shake about 20 minutes before lifting tonight, then a large meal afterwards. Am I on the right track?... wrong track?... making a big deal over nothing? Like I said, I'm new to this, but feel that any progress is good progress this early in the game... I just need to get the facts straight.

Anyway, thanks for reading, and for any help I receive . And, if you're reading this John, many thanks to you, and congrats on your achievement!

the best thing is to have a medium meal 45-1hr before you workout.. something simple like 1 chicken breast with 2 cups green beans.

after workout is when you wanna consume a protein shake and than within an hr after that you wont to consume SOLID protein and carb sources
