Middle School Track Length
Can somebody tell me what the common length's of tracks are?
Mainly I am interested in finding out how many laps = 1 mile for a high school / middle school track.
Thanks!
Mike

Four laps = 1 mile, from my experience.

The only think I will add to the above, is that sometimes it is true for lane 1 and sometimes it is measured out so that 4 laps is a mile for lane 5.

a standard athletics track is 400m on the very inside of the inside lane.
so if you run on the inside of the inside lane then when you get back to where you started, you have run 400m, thats why they have a staggered start for the 400m sprint.
but you americans make it difficult by not adopting the metric system, so it might well be different there.

I didn't mean to confuse anyone. It's just that at U of Penn in philadelphia, they decided to make 400 meters be the fifth lane. Instead of lane 1. But I agree that most tracks would have the first lane be 400 meters.
But if you run 1600 meters and come up with a really really good time. Check with someone else about the track.

They did? That's weird. I believe ya, though. I ran their for Penn relays a few years ago and don't remember anything. But it was for the DMR, so our start and subsequent legs wouldn't be affected the same way as an individual 400 meter.

A lot of the tracks I've run on here in the US also measure distance around one of the outside lanes; it's not that uncommon.
But yeah, a standard track is 400 meters or 440 yards, depending on when it was built, give or take ten feet or so.

Our HS track was 4 laps for a mile on the inside track IIRC.
