What's in the shake? Pure Whey Protein and nothing else? Or is it a MRP with added carbs (and what types), creatine, etc.?

There are a few reasons.

First of all I don't believe that you need anywhere near as much protein as most seem to advocate. Therefore, using a protein shake to boost your protein levels seems rather pointless.

Secondly, I believe that it is better to get as much as possible of your nutrition from regular food. This kinda goes together with my previous paragraph. No need for all that protein, no need to try to increase it with supplements.

Also, even though it's not really a good reason to not using protein shakes at all, I see many using shakes for those times when they say they need protein more than other times, such as right before or after workout. Since most people would say that it takes several days for a muscle to repair itself, it is logical to me that we need protein during all that time, not especially after working out. Therefore, the protein does not need to be convenient, but can come from real food.

These are, of course, my own personal thoughts. I'm not backing this by anything other than my own experiences and observations.

Try a proper PWO shake with whey protein and malto or dextrose for a week and then relay your experiences. I can tell the difference easily. Recovery is much quicker.

I agree. BUT the best time to drink a Post WorkOut (PWO) shake is right after the workout. - Dex/Malto + protein. The protein in this combo is not intended for direct muscle repair or growth, so I actually agree 100% with Knubb (well, probably 80-90% since I'm sure there's something there I don't quite agree with), even though I do take protein powder with my Dex right after working out.

I have not yet heard a reason to take protein-only meals.

Quicker than what? Not eating at all? Most definitely. I have no problem with my recovery time once I'm eating enough. It can't be much quicker. When I get the energy I need, my strength and muscle gains are through the roof, and I doubt that protein shakes can make any difference.

For the record, I do use dextrose. I used to make a protein shake out of eggs and regular sugar, but switching to only pure dextrose (with water) was in my eyes far better, even though I don't get any protein before an hour - hour and a half after my weight lifting. I do eat quite a bit of protein an hour before working out though, so that it's in my system WHEN I work out. No need for adding more after then.

As NEdge says, you should get something after a workout. From my experience, carbs are the most essential. This has nothing to do with reading that you need to replenish your glycogen stores, it has to do with what I felt my body react to.

Post-Workout shake/meal? Immediately after you lift. Ideally while driving home from the gym, or as soon as you walk in the door. I try to shuttle carbs in through some type of shake as soon as my workout is over.

Knubb Have you ever tried using protein shakes? it sounds like you are just saying because you are making good gains WITHOUT shakes, you would not make better progress with the shakes.

Malto & Dextrose... :d_confuse What is it and where do you get it from? Health shops?

Is it possible to get powder that contains all 3... Whey, dextrose & malto?

Sorry for the stupid question :d_tongue:

sure is, you can either buy it premade from a gnc(you'll be getting ripped off) or get a big tub of all the whey isolate and kent nutrition dex.

Then, in another empty tupperware container, take 2:1 ration of protein to carb. Works well.
