shrug problems

Post shrug problems

i have noticed recently, that when i do shrugs, on returning to the start position, that i get a tingling feeling the the end of my left thumb, and after a while it goes numb!! what could be causing this??

Sounds like a pinched nerve. Something in your cervical or thoracic spine does not like the movement you’re doing. May want to try a different exercise or see a chiropractor.

Lots of people should not shrug because they don't have the capsular stability to do the movement correctly while others like to roll their shoulders and really make a mess. Of course, it will never hurt some people so they will pass it along as fine. Have your shoulders and upper back evalutated by a doc and PT.

What else works your traps then? I know DL's do

DL's are the exercise for your traps and whole back in general. Do them from right below the knee in the rack if you just want to hit your back. Far superior to shrugs IMHO.

Going to agree with GMan, it sounds like a pinched nerve.

I hate, loathe, detest, abhor shrugs. Every time I ever did them, I ended up with a pulled muscle, be it my neck or my lats.

No, a high pull isn't an upright row. A high pull is more like an abandoned clean. It's an Olympic style movement done explosively.

I stand corrected.

I always call them upright rows, but I remember the weightlifting coach in high school calling them high pulls, so that's why I threw it out there.

Thanks for clarifying.

Speaking of (sorry to get off topic guys), I am not sure I understand the movement (Olympic style) you are describing. "Abandoned clean?" Like a push press (2nd half of the clean and jerk movement sorta)? Just curious (boy I'm lazy for not going and looking this up).

It's like the first half of a clean and jerk except you don't catch the bar. Can you see that? You just explosively throw the bar up without actually catching it. At least, that's what I've been shown.

Yes that makes sense to me. I was thinking it was the 2nd half of the clean and jerk, but it's (sorta) like the 1st half.
