When our beloved dog Digger died, my then three-year-old son Guthrie suddenly learned the finality of death. This is tough not just for dealing with a dog passing, it's a really tough lesson for kids.

The kids took it pretty well, I guess. There were plenty of tears, though. The boy took it like a champ; he took it better than anyone else. He wanted to see the body, and the girl didn't. He wanted to pet the dog's body and rub his ears the way he used to love, but the girl just cried and didn't want to look.

He seemed to handle it logically, not emotionally. Of course, he did get emotional, but he just said, "Everything dies sometime. Dogs, people...everything." He would be fine and dandy, then, all of a sudden, his lip would quiver, his voice would crack, and he'd say things like, "You know, the hardest thing about his death is that when we call his name, he will never answer us again. Never."

He had no problem with the idea of cremation because, after all, it's just skin and bones that will burn. Not our dog that we loved. He's gone. The girl was much more emotional about it. She hated the thought of the dog burning. The boy just kept telling her, "He's not burning! Only his fur and skin and bones are. He's dead."

The hardest part for me was that on the way to drop the body at the vet's, the boy said, "Can we visit him often? Can we come back and see his body in a few days?" That was when I had to make him understand that we'll never see him again. That was hard. Then, when they took the body out of his arms, the boy only made it a few minutes before panic set in, and he wanted to run down the hall and get him back. He controlled himself, though. He was very strong. I told him we'd put a picture of the dog in his room so he could see him every day.

Deja, I've wondered if he'll think back later about how he was playing with a dead body. It doesn't seem to bother him now. He's afraid he'll forget the dog. He says that he'll be old and married and forget that he ever even had fun times with the dog. That's his biggest fear: forgetting him.

The girl and I are going to scrapbook pictures of our old dog tonight, and she's very happy about that. She's very sentimental.

On the way to drop the body off, the kids were already asking if we could get another dog. They said they don't want to walk into an empty house with no dog waiting and excited to see them. We picked up two pups yesterday. The kids are so happy. They had the pups named within three minutes.
Damn that brought a tear to my eye. You and your family give each other some big hugs from me.

Those puppies are sooooooo cute!

Now gitcher ass back here woman.

Umm...hi.

I know it's been too long when Rapha's posting more than me!

So, here's the scoop (pics are downstairs to prove it all! ):

The boy started t-ball, and the girl started volleyball. They both love it and are having a hell of a time. I played volleyball in Jr. High and High School, so I'm having so much fun practicing with the girl! We both have bruised arms as we get used to the ball, but we have so much freaking fun.

Halloween was a BLAST! I had been given a "Little Miss Muffet" costume by a friend, but (I'm not sure if y'all are aware of this) SHE'S A SLUT!! It was so short and skimpy! I kept thinking, "I'm gonna have to squat not bend! Well, get a few drinks in me, and that'd be the last thing on my mind. So, I chickened out at the last minute, threw a jersey on, and went as a football player. I got wasted and had a blast. I won't post pics of that night. I have a friend whose name is Pamela Anderson, so she dressed accordingly with some huge-ass fake boobs. I looked at the camera the next morning to see a picture of me biting one of them.

The old man went out of town one weekend recently, so I took the opportunity to spend a shit-ton of money. I had painters come in and paint the down-stairs, and I bought all kinds of stuff to hang and decorate with. It looked totally different when he walked back in after his vacation.

I was feeling awful about myself on another weekend, so I decided to treat myself. I actually got fake nails thinking they'd make me feel nice and pretty. I hated them. I brought pictures to show her what I wanted, and it was as if she didn't even look at them. I guess it would have helped if we spoke the same language. I must have been PMSing because it made me want to cry. So, I scheduled a hair appointment thinking I could salvage the day and get a nice haircut. She was freaking horrible. I had her recut it, and it still looked bad. She was getting frustrated, and I was getting sad. So, I gave up, went home, grabbed some beer and scissors, and locked myself in the bathroom. When I woke up, I saw TONS of hair on the bathroom floor, and I was scared to look in the mirror! It looked fine, though. Better than it had after paying that woman for nothing the night before.

Let's see...what else? Oh, the pups are getting big. At seven weeks, the first pics I posted of them, they were 6 1/2 and 7 lbs. Three weeks later, they were 14 1/2 pounds!

The new job is turning out to be a bunch of me telling guys, "No, I'm married." Two guys have had their jobs threatened by the big guy over me, and I feel horrible. I've been told not to smile so much because, though in Texas it's being friendly, in AZ it's flirting.

Oh! I went to Texas to see the Raiders lose badly. I had a hell of a weekend, though! I made the most of it. I was feeling really down the last night because I was with people I don't know well, and I felt out of place. I was also spending money I shouldn't have been spending buying shots instead of cheap beer (I LOVE TEQUILA!), so I was feeling guilty for spending the money. Then, the waitress came over to me and told me that some guy was asking about me all night, paid for my whole tab, then left! He never said a word to me! That made me feel so good! Plus, my tab was zeroed out, so I could start fresh and drink more without the guilt! I ended up making new friends and having a blast.

I'm sure I'll think of some funny stories to tell y'all. A lot has happened. Now I need to catch up on everyone's journals! I told Rapha last night that's it's been so long since I'd read any journals that someone could have died, and I wouldn't even know. He said, "Oh, someone did die!" I felt HORRIBLE!! That lying shit. Anyway, it made me realize I need my friends, and I want y'all back.

Oh yeah, that's totally your fault. That's why it's a called a workplace, not a bar.

Welcome back!

Life has been sad lately. I've been kind of a wreck. I was thinking about how, since I'm having a hard time right now personally, it might help if I have something to focus on. I loved running. I haven't run in so long. I need some release, though. I need a distraction. No goals, no pressure, no deadlines...nothing but the enjoyment of the escape that running provides and the sense of accomplishment I get from it.

I hurt my knee pretty badly recently. I'm not sure how badly. I don't care. I can't run today, but I will tomorrow. I'm pretty sure that it's a better vice than beer. So, I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Sorry to read about the sads and your injured knee. I hope they both turn around for you. As much as running is a better avenue than beer to change your mood, take care not to further injure your knee. That would really suck.

Don't be a stranger.

I fear the sads won't leave me for a while. And I really need running now. I need something. Just something.
