John: not that it matters, but I was curious of what your current lifting stats are now days, compared to the last time you revealed them (if you don't mind)?

I was just wondering the same thing the other night. With the extra size you gained last bulk and then even more on SGX, there had to be some impressive strength gains! Just delta would be nice. +X on exercise Z.
I was about to fall asleep the other night and it popped into my head "I bet John's squatting some insanity now." (As compared to then.) Afterwards, I couldn't get back to sleep because I started to think about where I want to be and how I can tweak my leg routine.

Apples to Oranges. My training style this year is very different than what I did last year. Right now I'm training with fairly heavy weights and medium-high reps. Before I was training with very heavy weight and low reps. I also am going pretty slow (2/3 concentric/eccentric) with a pause and a strong flex at the midpoint. Also, I only rest 1 minute between sets (except squats and deads - 2 minutes on those), where before I was resting 3-4 minutes between sets.
Keeping all that in mind, I'm squatting and deadlifting more this year in the 10-12 rep range than I was at the end of my last bulk in the 4-6 rep range. I'm also doing more sets per exercise this year (4 vs. 3). I'm considerably stronger now than a year ago, and my muscles seem to recover faster thanks to training with the shorter rest intervals.

Sounds right to me.

As I promised in today's Daily News update, I stepped up and took my back workout to a whole new level of pain.
After last week's workout, I mentioned that my grip was failing me on deads. Well, I added another 10 pounds this week and I had to pause to "re-grip" twice during the first set. Bah. After that set, I decided that I was not going to let my grip restrict my back development, and I made the choice to wear lifting straps for the first time ever. I'm WELL aware of the pros and cons of lifting straps, and let me say right up front I am NOT looking for a debate on the subject. Thanks.
Anyway, after I put on the straps I found that my back was more than able to handle the new load. I did 4 sets of 8 at the new weight. I've been adding 10 pounds per week without fail for a few months now... I may just go up 20 pounds next week. We'll see.
I also decided to try the straps with my wide-grip weighted pull-ups. I found that they really helped me "hook" the bar with my fingertips instead of grabbing it. I always try to focus on my lats when doing pull-ups, but by hooking the bar with just my fingertips I was able to all but eliminate bicep recruitment. My lats got a great workout! Again, I'm not looking for a debate on this subject; it's been done to death.
I went up 5 more pounds on my reverse-grip ez-bar rows, and 5 more pounds on my T-bar rows. I was able to do 4 sets of 12 for each, so next week I'll raise the weight again. I went up 10 pounds and almost doubled the number of reps I could do with my burnout barbell shrugs, thanks to the lifting straps. Hey, I wish my grip was strong enough to do 4 sets of 15+ shrugs with 300+ pounds on the bar. I'm going to work on that, but in the meantime the straps are awesome.
Just one picture tonight - I'm exhausted! Here's a slightly different back pose than normal. I seem to notice a little improvement each week - my mid-back is coming up! Photos are an awesome motivational tool (big surprise, coming from me )

Beware those deads! They're a bummer when you pull something. Great progress though -- your back is improving very fast!

Deads are your friend. Just make sure you use absolutely perfect form, and don't ever let your ego dictate the weight you use.

Is that horrible form video a joke or did someone actually do that?
Very nice back John. You said something about wanting to a start a strap debate... well, you see...

Thanks, guys - I really appreciate the encouragement. My delts progress in particular is making me very, very happy. I think my rear delts are saying, "Wow, he's actually working us?! About time, now let's grow!"
I don't usually imagine my delts talking to one another. I'm tired, OK?

Unknown. We debated it here on the forum some time ago: some think it was done on purpose, I happen to believe it's real.

Wow... I'm just in awe, John. Your transformation in that side tricep shot is great. I bet when you started your journey, you had no idea you'd look the way you do now. When it comes to shaping your physique, I guess we all step out on faith, and we let it progress from there.
Awesome job, my friend!
