I know this is a late journal update, but I wanted to make an entry about today's back workout. It was very tough and I honestly didn't know if I'd make it through. I was sweating so hard I had to re-write my workout log.

I added 5 pounds to my low cables rows and did 4 sets. I did almost the same number of reps as last week, too. I added 5 pounds to my weighted wide-grip pull-ups and did 4 sets of 8. Next I did deads, and they were quite a challenge: I added another 10 pounds this week, and banged out 4 sets of 8. By the time I was done with the deads, I really thought I was going to lose my 4:00 PM meal. After my deads I took 3 minutes rest and finished up my back with 4 sets of bent-over DB rows. I really wanted to stop at this point, but instead I sent my mind off to someplace where it would be much happier and did 4 sets of burnout shrugs.

I've been doing this back workout for 3 weeks now, so next week I'll be changing some things up. I'll still do deads and wide-grip pull-ups, but I'll do something new instead of the cable rows and the DB rows.

No pictures tonight, I had nothing left after my workout.

Tonight was chest and abs, and it was another challenging and satisfying workout.

My right shoulder (the bad one) did not bother me in the slightest. My left shoulder, however, started hurting a little after my last set of decline bench presses. It was a different kind of pain compared to what I feel in my right shoulder. I was able to continue the workout, and by the end of my cable work/start of my abs it was fine again.

A few pictures tonight...

First, a chest closeup and spread arms shot. I'm happy with the way my shoulders are starting to become more full and rounded. I think by the end of my bulk they will be looking much better.

"OK USA!"

(actually I should have done a "thumb's up". I guess it's time to watch Bloodsport again so I can bone up on my quotes!)

Silly picture, but, again, I like how my shoulders are starting to shape up. There's still a lot of work to be done...

It was the fights that made me first watch it, but the acting and dialog are what keeps me coming back for more.

How... arbitrary. OK.

I added weight to my incline presses.

Great pics John, Your pecs have great shape to them and a great cut (not too close in the middle, not to far apart). Pretty much a perfect shape in my eyes. (incidently, the same kinda shape and cut as mine, only not quite the mass of course )

Keep up the good work (yer, like had i not said that you would have quit on me lol )

Today marks a proud achievement for me: my arms are the biggest they've ever been in my life, even bigger than they were at the end of my bulk last year.

In August 2004 my arms were 13.75 inches, cold (no pump). At the end of my 2004 bulk I was at 14% body fat and my arms we're 16.25 inches, cold. When I started my bulk a little over two weeks ago at 8% body fat, my arms were 16 inches, cold. In just over two weeks I've manged to pack on a good half inch to my arms. As of right now my arms are 16.5 inches, cold.

I knew with SwoleCat's SUP2 nutritional program and my hard work in the gym I was going to grow, but I didn't expect to pack on a half inch to my arms in just 16 days. Part of it is the creatine, but I've never seen much of a size difference when I've taken creatine in the past. It will be interesting to see how much longer it takes me to hit an unpumped 17 inches. I'm thinking by this time next month I'll be in the neighborhood.

Of course I took a picture.

Thumbs up

I remember when I first visited this site. It was from a link on college humor a few years ago. In your after pic you were extremely ripped and skinny. It's amazing what your dedication and hard work has accomplished for you. You've packed on so much muscle and still maintained that killer physique. Nice work John.

Hey John, I know I can probably find this in this thread somewhere, but considering this thing is longer than the Bible, I figured I'd just ask.

Do you do the same workout each time for each muscle group or do you vary it each week? If so, do you just do what you're in the mood for or do you have a routine written out that you cycle every X numbers of weeks?

College Humor slammed my site pretty hard (in terms of traffic). I remember the Fark/College Humor "1-2 punch" very well! Did you know when this site was first posted to Fark I was running the whole thing from a web server in my home office over a cable modem connection? Man, that was a rude awaking as I scrambled to get a new server built and moved to a datacenter.

Thanks very much for the comments!

Yeah, my wrists are thin - just 6.5 inches around. I don't directly work my forearms, but they seem to get plenty of action on bicep day.

I've done lots of different techniques of switching things around over the years, but for this bulk I'm changing my exercises around every 3 weeks.

I totally forgot about the beginning!

I thought it was groundbreaking that they had the part of the young Frank Dux played by a kid with Down syndrome.

Funny thing is, the actor playing Tanaka, Roy Chiao, wasn't Japanese, either, he was Chinese!

Today Lisa and I spent the whole day doing some serious fall cleaning. The house is spotless! Needless to say, by the time my workout rolled around I was dead tired, so I decided to just skip it.

YEAH, RIGHT!

Actually I had an excellent workout. That's especially cool, because being a little tired wasn't the only thing working against me tonight. I'll explain....

Lisa and I decided to start decorating for Christmas a little early this year. Well, I had the tree all set up and lit, but it was time for me to workout and Lisa wanted to finish trimming the tree. The problem is decorating the tree is not much fun with heavy metal blaring from the speakers. Christmas music prevailed. After a couple of sets, I found the situation so comical that I shot a quick video between exercises (I'm such a goof, I know): http://www.johnstonefitness.com/imag...as_workout.wmv

(2.46 MB, WMV format)

I decided that hard work and holiday spirit are not mutually exclusive, so I finished my workout with a Santa hat.

In all seriousness, I had an amazing workout and zero shoulder pain. I'm feeling great right now!
