So I was looking at protein alternatives at my local health food store, and they have a company that they can order ANY kind of meat from... anything from traditional weird stuff like free range chickens, buffalo, whole suckling pig, lamb, etc., to more exotic stuff like pheasant, ostrich, emu, venison, etc., to really exotic stuff like whole alligator, whole rattlesnake, caribou, elk, muskox, and many other strange and delicious animals.
Anyway, I was looking to add some variety to my diet... chicken is already getting old, I'm allergic to most fish, and can't really afford the amount of shellfish I would need. So, I decided to order some good lean ostrich meat (very tasty BTW, and quite healthy as far as red meat goes). Looking over their price list, I noticed that they had fresh ostrich EGGS for sale... I remember seeing an episode of Julia Child where she made an omelette with one (along with some very expensive black truffles), and I think she said it was the equivalent of like 18 large chicken eggs. She even needed this ridiculous sized pan just to prepare the meal...
Has anyone tried these things? Do they taste like normal eggs? I am debating getting one just for "kicks and giggles", but they're almost $35.00 a piece! I figure I can drain out the whites and store them in a container in the fridge for awhile, kind of like my egg beaters, but I'm afraid raw eggs wouldn't last too long.
Also, is any familiar with other healthy "game" meats? I'd love to try some of the other items on their list, but I know that alot of game tends to be quite fatty, and relatively low in protein for it's weight. On the plus side, at least we know that wild game is completely natural, cage-free, and hormone free!
Sorry to ramble... now I've gone and made myself hungry
