Get yourself a block of wood to act as a small step. Place the balls of your feet on it with mid-foot and heel hanging off. Really stretch your calves on the down motion and flex hard at the top.

i can do fairly large amounts of weight on the standing calf raise machine at the gym. how are u guys doing calf raises at home? i have a rack at home so getting a barbell on my traps is not a problem but how can i get a better stretch of the calfs at the bottom of the movement and maintain balance througout the excercise with heavy weight on traps?
