Default Integrating weight training and running training

I'm currently doing a 3-day weight training split, with running on the off days (3x/week). It's going well, but ever since doing a couple of 5K races and doing surprisingly well, the running bug has got me.

I've found an intermediate training program that has 5 days/week runs, and I'm thinking of giving it a go. I really don't want to give up the strength program I'm working on, but I may have to at least modify it if I want to pursue the running program full-tilt.

Does anyone have any experience with combining running and weights where neither exercise winds up being an "afterthought"?

Thanks...

I'm not entirely sure what the question is, but I lift 3 times per week and usually either cycle or run 3-4 times also so it can be done with progress being made on all fronts. The only concession I make is to stop leg work at the gym when it starts to interfere with my marathon training. Some other JSFers can do the big training runs and still squat, deadlift, etc., but I've found that I can't.

It's an addiction once you catch the bug. I was like you years ago wanting the best of both worlds, now I run 6-7x a week, and lift 2-3 for 45mins or so, basically for injury prevention.

If you find you really enjoy running, go balls out with it. SOunds like you have seen some success in times, pace, distance, etc. Success is a great motivator to push yourself even harder. If you stick with running you're endurance will skyrocket fairly fast in the beginning, speed is the harder of the two to develop, which takes years or base building and speedwork. Sign up for a goal race a couple months out, and train for it. It will be very rewarding if you stick it out til the end.

DOn't forget too, running is training the most important part of your body, way more than lifting could ever do, your heart. You got the bug, not many people like the bug, but those who do never want the bug to leave. You might be one of those select few. Get out there n lace em up!
