Comments:
When I do front squats the movement tends to be a lot faster and more explosive than when I do back squats. The pause at the bottom is much shorter (basically non-existent). Maybe that's my problem with back squats.

If you think that might be the problem, do you think that you might just be over-thinking your back squats (that's a lot of thinking). Maybe you've decided that it's a weak lift for you, so you're over-thinking the movement when you should be exploding upwards?

Just a thought (cos I thinking, with all the thinking).

I think you may be overworking your legs

Between direct legwork, olympic lifts and deadlift variants you legs are worked pretty hard every week

My puny squat had a mini plateau a while back but moving to an upper/lower split helped get things going again

That may very well be. I do tend to overthink my lifts and this is probably part of the problem with my back squats.

I don't think that my legs get worked too much, especially since my plan includes a deload every 3-4 weeks. However, it's something that I'll keep in mind. I keep going up on my front squat, Bulgarians and OHS, it's just my back squat that's lagging behind, though I am making progress with that as well.
