View Full Version : I love protein shakes!
stepsinsc February 11th, 2004, 11:32 AM Not necessarily for the protein, but for those little scoops that come with them! This is probably common knowledge, but I figured out a while back that they're exactly 1/4 of a cup, and they're a huge help now that I'm counting every litle bit I eat. Before it was almost impossible to measure out exactly 1/4 cup of certain stuff, like peanuts, but now I can just scoop it with those babies. Works great for cereal, rice, etc... and other stuff that can take up time to pour, and re-pour when you're trying to measure.
Haha stupid post I guess. A lil bored.
djerickd February 11th, 2004, 11:45 AM what brand are you using?

:p Ummm... can't you just use a 1/4c measuring cup to measure a quarter cup?
CattleProd February 11th, 2004, 12:18 PM I guess you could use a 1/4 cup measure, but why go hunting for it every time? You could just leave the old whey scoop in the cereal box for example.
Thanks for pointing that out! :tucool:

stepsinsc February 11th, 2004, 12:53 PM I've used several different brands, Celltech, Nitrotech, GNC Whey, EAS Simply Whey, they all have the same 1/4 scoop.
Yes I can use 1/4 of a measuring cup, but that requires pouring it into the cup on a flat surface, checking it, and removing some if I overfilled it, etc... I know its only like 30 seconds, but for example I leave one scoop in the cereal box. And with things like peanuts, its a pain in the butt to measure out only 1/4th of a cup because you can't get really level with lumpy nuts, so instead I just scoop one out and wa-la!

You always want mass, unless the substance behaves in a liquid manner.
For example, I weigh almonds, but I scoop oatmeal mix. The almonds don't move well or compress for a good weight:volume ratio. The oatmeal mix on the other hand, does! Since all the oatmeal mix bits are small and move like a liquid, a scoop works well enough.
Also, at least in the U.S. all serving sizes will be given in grams and/or mililiters, whichever is appropriate. Weighing things out can be much easier and lets you know you're getting exactly the right amount!

not a quarter of a measuring cup, a 1/4 measuring cup. measuring cups come in sets: 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/3 cup, 1/4 cup.
no doubt it's handy to have them around, i'm certainly not slagging off your idea, just yanking your chain a little. thanks for the tip.

Jingo February 11th, 2004, 03:58 PM you know to us brits the whole idea of measuring by the cup is very silly :)
I've always thought "how come these guys weigh stuff out to the gram then use something as random as a cup? how big is a cup?"
Didn't realise for a long time you actually have a fixed unit of measurement called a cup hehe.
Two Step February 11th, 2004, 04:19 PM I gotta go with Daveo on this one - go out and get a scale. You'll find it becomes much easier to measure all kinds of different foods with a scale. For example, at dinner I can just throw my plate on the scale and then add so much of this and so much of that - couldn't be easier. And scales get you an exact amount every time - do you really take the time to level off the scoop etc?
I picked up a digital kitchen scale at Target for about $15. It doen't have grams (which is kind of a bummer) but the conversion to ounces is simple so it doen't slow me down to much.
djerickd March 16th, 2004, 10:31 AM I just noticed that all scoops are not the same and I remembered this thread...
My Muscle Tech Nitro Tech has a 70CC scoop
My AlltheWhey vanilla has a 90CC scoop.
