View Full Version : If you could go back in time........
Fly_Moe November 8th, 2004, 06:02 PM If you could go back in time to any period in our planet's history and could meet anyone or view any event that's happened, who would you go back to meet or which event would you go back to view? And why?
This might sound cheesy, but for me I've always been a huge dinosaur fan since I was a little kid. I would like to go back in history to the Jurassic era and see a real T-Rex and see why the dinosaurs actually became extinct. Of course there would be tons of people I would like to meet as well if I could go back in history, but I've always had this fascination with dinosaurs. I don't know what it is about them, but that's what I would see if I could. Of course, I would probably get eaten if I saw a T-Rex :spaz: , but that would be so cool to actually see one live. Also, I would really like to know if it was a meteor or some kind of disease that killed the dinosaurs off. I think that would be an interesting time to view in our planet's history.
brezman November 8th, 2004, 06:08 PM I'd go back maybe 5 years in my own lifetime and try and convince myself not to do some stupid stuff.
OF course this is based on the premise you can change the timeline you're going to.
Just for observation-- US around the time of the revolutionary war would be neat.
adeyman November 8th, 2004, 07:01 PM That is a hard question. There are so many things I'd like to experiance/see. Both the big ones have been mentioned already. I'd like to see what dinosaurs really looked like, were they lizard like, did they have feathers, were they hairy like a dog :D .I'd also like to experiance WW1 for a day just because I can't imagine what it must have been like.

Human Clay November 8th, 2004, 09:30 PM I'd like to be an invisible observer to the rise and fall of the Roman Empire:) Or maybe even be reincarnated through the whole darn thing for the full experience (although I like the idea of not being tied down like that, so that I could witness as much as possible without the punishment of mortality).
It's just that we hear so much about it, and it extended so far, I'd just like to know what it was like to live through it.
rob0t November 8th, 2004, 09:44 PM my favorite time period in ancient history was ancient egypt, so probably that!!
J2kDarkSkies November 8th, 2004, 10:48 PM T Rex wasn't in the Jurassic period.
I would go to 1942 and fight in World War II.
Skoorb November 8th, 2004, 11:04 PM Obviously I'd have to check out jesus and see what's up with him.
Otherwise, yep seeing dinosaurs would be fantastic, and that's where I'd go, no doubt about it.

i agree with Skoorb on this one....I would DEFINETLY go back and meet Jesus himself....my Catholic upbringing has left me with a lot of questions....I would want to see the reality for myself.
PetriJR November 9th, 2004, 03:07 AM I'd have to say that I'd definitely would see Jesus at the time when he was picking his disciples and would try to get in to the lot.
paranouei November 9th, 2004, 04:45 AM I would go to Egypt, at the time of the construction of the pyramids of Gizeh (or Giza) (http://home.planet.nl/~monique.schilders/pyramids.html). I would like to see how could they build such engineering wonders at that time, which is still a mistery nowadays...
In particular, I would like to see the construction of the great pyramid (http://ce.eng.usf.edu/pharos/wonders/pyramid.html) , which is the only surviving of the Seven Ancient Wonders.
I've always been a fan of the pyramids, and I'll go to Egypt someday to see them by myself

I would go to 1942 and fight in World War II.
I would go back to 1937 and assasinate Stalin and Hitler, and make SURE the commanders (Short and Himmel, I believe) at Pearl Harbor were aware of the impending attack in 1941. With any luck, this would prevent/delay WWII and the cold war. But even if it didn't, it would probably save millions of lives.

With any luck, this would prevent/delay WWII and the cold war. But even if it didn't, it would probably save millions of lives.I personally wouldn't mess with history, because you just can't say what would happen. There are probably indeterminate benefits from WWII, like if the abomb hadn't been blown twice in 1945, maybe it would have been discovered in 1950, perfected for a couple of decades, and then released in vietnam in a big wave and kill many more. It's just hard to say :) Or, maybe the cold war would have occurred, but without the fear of 1945's explosions, Russia and/or US would have been more likely to use them.
ThatOldGuy November 9th, 2004, 08:56 AM Two things:
1. I'd love to watch the building of the pyramids. Just how did they do that?
2. I'd put myself in Dealy Plaza on Nov 22, 1963 with a camcorder focused on the sixth story window. My wife would be with me with another camera focused on the grassy knoll.
Bluestreak November 9th, 2004, 09:08 AM Two things, I couldn't choose which:
1.) I would meet Marcus Tullius Cicero. One of Rome's greatest statesmen, a witness to the death of Julius Caesar, and a great philosopher. He was a much greater man than I may ever hope to be, but records and accounts of Cicero that have survived through the ages purports that we share many personality traits that make me think it would be very interesting to meet him and see what he was actually like.
2.) I would go back to Florence, Italy for the construction of the Duomo (http://www.union.ic.ac.uk/arts/orchestra/pictures/full-size%20photos/DUOMO.JPG) (warning, large picture). This structure is magnificent and to this day, the exact method of engineering and construction of the dome itself are not known. If you look closely at the picture you can see people viewing Florence from the top of the cathedral. To think that this grand structure was erected in a day before modern construction technology (engineered construction materials, cranes, etc.) was available is astounding to me. Someday, I will stand on the Duomo myself and look out over the Florence.

joecan November 9th, 2004, 10:33 AM I would either go back and meet Jesus or go and see the dinosaurs that roamed what is now North America.
Iced Earth November 9th, 2004, 11:42 AM I too would go back and find Jesus, and ask him if the Da Vinci Code is really true. Then again, he would probably look at me and say, "Who the hell is Da Vinci?".
I'd also go back 40 years and buy up all the real estate I could.
And as someone else mentioned, finding out how the pyramids were really constructed would be of top priority. There's a huge chunk of missing history there that I think would answer a lot of questions.
PeteBDawg November 9th, 2004, 12:49 PM If I wanted to save lives on the historical scale, I can think of a place I'd rather go than sneaking into Stalin's and Hitler's inner sanctuaries.
I'd go back to late April, 1914, in Sarajevo. Every day, I would visit a small cafe called Zlatna Moruna. One day, I would notice a bunch of shady characters reading newspaper clippings under a gas-jet lamp in the back of the cafe. At that moment, I would take out an Uzi, kill everyone in the cafe, and flee the scene back to my own time, and read about the long and prosperous reign of the Emperor Franz Ferdinand while riding a luxury passenger blimp across the Atlantic.
If you prevent World War I, you probably also prevent World War II. Of course, I've played the Red Alert games, so I know this sort of thing could be sticky and probably lead to terrible things sooner or later, but that's where I'd go.

The_Jackel November 10th, 2004, 06:44 PM the stoneage, as someone in the simpsons said "time to get me some caveman hooka's" lol not really.
i would actually really like to go far into the future (without ageing that is) maybe the year 4006 and see how we've progressed if we're not already living on mars ;)
Jim November 10th, 2004, 08:13 PM The time of Jesus Christ.
I'm not religious but there is an arguement between religions on how he died, I'd like to know the truth.
Chris November 10th, 2004, 09:39 PM Well, it's a toss up, can't say going back in time and getting in tight with Bill Gates is a bad idea, but going back to 1947 and seeing exactly what crashed in Roswell would be really cool :D
Might be fun also to go back a few weeks ago and when the Red Sox were down 3-0, bet the farm on each and every game and walk away filthy rich
nate1 November 11th, 2004, 02:05 AM EBAY ANYONE.....HELLO, oh yea, Marry into the Walton family, they seem to be doin' alright
Sazuki November 11th, 2004, 03:48 AM Wow! I'd go back to babylon and view the hanging gardens. Go to the greek age and view the collusus, and the lighthouse of alexandria. Also i'd try to hook up with socrates, aristole, and plato :)
I would want to see the happening of the renaissance, meet da vinci, van gogh etc.
Also i'd take a look at feudal japan, see how the sumarai lived.
Hmm, nice to dream about this! :)
PeteBDawg November 11th, 2004, 11:30 AM That definitely sounds awesome.
But you should plan an extra stop - Van Gogh was born in 1853, so he didn't hang out with Da Vinci so much.
They do seem like contemporaries, though, at least in the qualities of their imaginations. Maybe they had conversations. Van Gogh did come off as pretty bonkers, it wouldn't be impossible . . .
