Now in which movie did they use special effects/make-up?
Can't imagine he starved himself just to fit the role ...

Why not? Acting is his life, what he does for a living. Dedicated actors/actresses do these kinds of things...
Skoorb November 5th, 2004, 09:18 AM OH MY GOOD GOD!!!! That is probably the most extreme transformation I've seen in a movie, in terms of weight loss, and even more so than what hanks did in his movie. Holy crap, give this guy a burger!
Reno_1ted November 5th, 2004, 09:46 AM Woah.
Thats some mad s**t there.
badgolfer November 5th, 2004, 09:47 AM OH MY GOOD GOD!!!! That is probably the most extreme transformation I've seen in a movie, in terms of weight loss, and even more so than what hanks did in his movie. Holy crap, give this guy a burger!
yeah he looks terrible for this part. i cant believe its the same person.
karatetricker November 5th, 2004, 09:54 AM That is crazy... but it's his profession. Actors/Actresses gain/lose massive amounts of weight all the time for roles. That's definitely the most muscle loss I've seen though.
1FastGTX November 5th, 2004, 11:53 AM He looks discusting.
ohjimmy November 5th, 2004, 01:05 PM I think they said he lost 68 lbs for that role. He's around 120 lbs in that movie. I read in People that his diet consisted of tons of water, a latte and an apple or yogurt or something every day and that's it.
:d_eek:
1FastGTX November 5th, 2004, 02:04 PM American Psycho was on USA channel last night. I was just thinking how ripped he looked too. Sad. You know who he reminds me of in American Psycho? John Stone!!! NOT the way he acts but the way his body looks (lol). Seriously in that pic of him flexing his bicep he really reminded me of John.
I guess it's his job. I can't imagine doing that myself though, don't even know if I COULD do it. I would personally turn down the role if I had to do that. But would welcome a role in a film where I had to get pretty buff and ripped, especially if I got the luxury of a trainer, chef, massage therapist.... :)
sebol November 5th, 2004, 02:12 PM I mean this guy was like the personification of the ideal body I'm trying to achieve ...
and now he looks like he came straight out of a concentration camp!
Poor, poor muscles, all the hard work http://www.longshine.de/phpbb2/images/smiles/icon_cry.gif http://www.longshine.de/phpbb2/images/smiles/nixweiss.gif http://www.longshine.de/phpbb2/images/smiles/bawling.gif

If I was getting paid enough I'd drop down a lot of weight, but going from 180 down to 120 I would definitely think hard about, because even for tons of money that simply has to be really unhealthy. I'd drop 30 lbs, including muscle, if I was getting paid, but this guy surely had to undergo a lot of medical supervision. I bet he was a real pain in the ass to be around too. I know I wouild be!
ShadowPenguin November 5th, 2004, 03:15 PM now just think of how he has to bulk to become batman.

Supposedly muscle memory would allow him to gain it back, but has anybody read anything true and definitive on muscle memory, or is it more myth than reality?
JMR November 5th, 2004, 04:25 PM No myth. Been there several times. It takes much less time to return that it did the first time around. Hopefully, I'll be giving you a good demonstration soon. I took some pics the other night and I'm definitely smaller than the shots from August. I haven't been able to lift since June.

kmfisher November 5th, 2004, 04:32 PM This rivals the Donnie Walhberg transformation for The Sixth Sense. He drank nothing but carrot juice for months. If you don't remember, he's the guy from the intro to the movie.
JMR November 5th, 2004, 04:32 PM No, you'll get to that point where you were before pretty quickly and then it will dramatically slow down... too dramatically in my case. Aging is a bitch.

R U SERIOUS?? i didnt even know that was him....yikes.
kolin February 20th, 2005, 09:18 PM Before i found this site i read about this guy lossing weight so fast....
He ate an apple a day for months and then durring the end he said he would just have a cup of "really milky coffee" for the whole day...
after reading that i didnt eat anything for 3 days trying to mimic this, but then gave up becuase it was "too hard" (too stupid). I have tried so many other things and just this past december starvation seemed like a really good option for me...My sister had incredible results with anorexia....
I really think its a bit irresponsible for hollywood to be doing things like this becuase stupid people like me will then attempt it.
Man im glad i found this site and am getting educated...
Destiny February 20th, 2005, 11:52 PM Why did he lose so much weight for the role? He looks like he has an eating disorder. Is that part of the role?
chicanerous February 21st, 2005, 12:28 AM I didn't see the movie but I think his character had severe insomnia and hadn't slept in years.
rtestes February 21st, 2005, 01:36 AM Wait to you see him in Batman Begins.

It doesn't sound like he had any trouble adding the weight back -

This guy's got complete control over his physique.
uRi February 21st, 2005, 09:19 AM 1 can of tuna & 1 apple per day
+ lots of water and cigarettes
that was his diat approach. the film should pretty good at least when you believe the critics.
quote from imdb.com
Trivia: The producers of the film claim that Christian Bale dropped from about 190 pounds in weight down to about 130 pounds in weight to make this film. They also claim that Bale actually wanted to drop down to 110 pounds, but that they would not let him go below 130 out of fear that his health could be in too much danger if he did. His diet consisted of one can of tuna and an apple per day. His 63 pound weight loss is said to be a record for any actor for a movie role. He since gained the weight back. (more)

BusyChild February 21st, 2005, 10:06 AM I hope its a better movie than American Psycho !!!
Avanti February 21st, 2005, 10:51 AM Another extreme transformation is that of Vincent D'Onofrio, for the role of Private "Gomer Pyle" in Full Metal Jacket, he gained 70 punds, which I believe still is the "world record"...

Have not been able to find a "before" pic of him since he was pretty unknown before that movie..
JoeBiron February 21st, 2005, 12:35 PM I hope its a better movie than American Psycho !!!
Agreed. Aside from admiring Bale's physique that film was a total joke, IMO.

Wasn't it sort of supposed to be a joke? I loved that movie. It was hilarious!
vatechguy February 21st, 2005, 01:48 PM The whole idea of the film was that it was outrageous - then at the end they show you that it was all in the guys screwed up head.
How can you not find it hilarious when a man goes to the ATM and it says "Feed me a cat!"
I gave it two thumbs up :tu: :tu: - can't wait to see him play Batman.
 roflmao!!!
1FastGTX February 21st, 2005, 02:09 PM Regarding American Psycho - read the book. It's much different than the movie. Well same plot and all, but much more graphic. They definitely left a lot out of the movie, probably a good thing too (the book is almost too gross!).
Remember the beginning when they show his morning ritual? Well they left a lot out of the movie during that part. That part is a few complete pages in the book, and it's very interesting (writing is brilliant IMO), and very funny. :) Dude must take 3 hours to get ready for work.

Yeah I remember a friend reading me a sample of a chapter from the book. I thought it was a really interesting writing style. I also remember that book being banned - I dont remember the details - it may have been banned from my college's campus store or maybe it was more widespread than that. I "got" the fact that the movie was supposed to be outrageous - it just didnt work for me.
Was Bale in Reign of Darkness? That was a cool flick.
Arwes February 21st, 2005, 10:14 PM Wait to you see him in Batman Begins.
Yep, he had to bulk up within six weeks or the Batman job would possibly go to someone else. He said he gorged on pizza and ice cream every day to get the weight back up. This wasn't without its consequences however...he said that for a short while he did have an eating disorder after bulking back up.
From a 10/04 IMDB news article:
American Psycho star Christian Bale was so determined to beef up to play Batman just six weeks after playing an emaciated machine operator in The Machinist he made himself sick by gorging on pizza and ice-cream. The actor lost a third of his body weight for The Machinist and only had a few weeks to bulk up to impress producers as a potential Caped Crusader in Batman Begins. He recalls, "It was only about six weeks between finishing The Machinist and doing the screen test for Batman Begins. The director, Christopher Nolan, asked me to try and put on as much weight as I could because he would find it very difficult to convince the studio to cast me if I was a beanpole. In doing so I overdid it because I was enjoying gorging. I was ignoring advice about taking it slowly because my stomach had shrunk, and I should just go with soups. I was straight into pizza and ice-cream and eating five meals in a sitting. My stomach expanded really quickly. I got very sick during that time but I enjoyed getting sick. I didn't mind it at all. In that short amount of time I did actually go from 121 (pounds) right back up to 180 (pounds) which is way too fast so that resulted in some doctor visits to get things sorted out."
Though I'm thrilled he got the part, that can't be good for his body.
Skoorb February 22nd, 2005, 04:42 PM My arteries clog, reading about people gaingin weight so quickly.
Nico February 22nd, 2005, 04:48 PM In this role he plays a guy who hasn't slept or eaten in months. I read that Christian was able to put the weight back on rather easily and now he's ripped again.
Avanti May 6th, 2005, 03:53 PM Found this on John Malkovichs trivia page on imdb:
"When he was 16, he decided to get his excessive weight under control and lost 70 pounds by eating nothing but Jell-O for two months."
has anyone else tried that diet...?
PeteBDawg May 6th, 2005, 04:56 PM Wow!
Should we call that the "I'm so frickin' hard core and crazy that my full-time job will be to get people to pay me millions of dollars just to look hard core and crazy while they shoot film footage of me" diet?

He could have been to Jell-O what Jared is to Subway. Imagine that...
