I've been on my new "eating plan" for just over two weeks now - inspired by discovering John's site in mid-January. I have decided to follow Tom Venuto's BFFM (Burn Fat, Feed Muscle) program which puts me on a 55/30/15 (carb/prot/fat) calorie mix.

Results are promising so far - 4 pounds and 1% BF loss.

However, my lovely wife is threatening "dire consequences" unless I manage to control the extreme amount of flatulence that my new eating plan seems to have created. I have tried the standard remedy (Beano) without significant results; this week, I am trying some herbal enzyme supplements from the local healthfood store - if anything, it's worse.

Advice from any of you who've already been down this road would be much appreciated.

common issue with increased protein intake, especially with a 55% protein balance! welcome to the club, the renuzit air freshener is over on the table!

I used to have the same problem. And from time-to-time I still do.

I found that the amount of protein I ate in one setting was the culprit ... especially concerning whey. So, now I never consume a double scoop of whey anymore. 90 minutes later I may get another one scoop but I found this old body couldn't handle so much at once.

Good Luck!

Its either that extra milk that you're getting in the shake or the whey protein powder. If you mix your whey with milk, cut that out and use water and see if that helps. Otherwise, try spreading your protein intake more throughout the day.

If none of that works, try switching to soy or egg powder. Other then that, you're only alternative is to try to make up the protein with tuna/chicken etc etc

If you've increased your dairy intake then it may be lactose intolerance. You might try cutting down the dairy intake or taking lactase enzyme pills and see if that helps.

Thanks to everyone for your prompt replies. Other than rebalancing my daily calorie mix, the most significant change does seem to be the amount of dairy (milk, eggs, yogurt, and cottage cheese) I am now consuming (was essentially zero before). [Are eggs considered "dairy" in this context? Or does "dairy" specifically refer to milk and product derived from milk?].

The second most significant change is the amount of brown rice consumed (several cups / day up from near zero).

I will look into supplements that increase lactose tolerance and see if that helps.

What about when it's the woman that has the issues? :o
I thought mine was because of whey/lactose...but I think it's actually just too much fiber. I've always had oatmeal (old fashioned) for breakfast & ate a decent amount of whole grains/fruits/veggies, but this summer it was horrible b/c of all the fresh fruits & salads. I thought your body was supposed to get used to levels of fiber...but I don't think mine has that ability. To try to figure out the problem...switched to soy protein & soy milk for while...but I couldn't handle the texture of the soy protein powder. Any ideas? I'm just skipping the protein supp's all together now (still a little uneasy about going back to whey) & would like to have something w/my oats in the morning if I don't have eggs.

I'm currently going through the same thing. I have noticed that when I take a triple scoop whey shake in the mddle of the day, by the evening, things start getting really ripe. If I don't have the shake, and I get my protien through other sources, things are normal. I think that if you balance your protien intake and try harder to get them from other sources, you won't have the problem as bad. I'm definitley working in that direction...

You could try some pro-biotics. We have a product called PB-8. It may help with your gas, as its used to aid in digestion. Might actually make it worse though....not sure.

I heard that flatulence is caused by incomplete proteins. Products like beano are supposed to complete protein chains in your belly, and subsequently, no gas. But it doesn't always work.

I could be that you haven't taken enough beano! If you're having a megaprotein snack, that one little beano isn't going to be enough.

I've also heard that eating crytalized ginger with your protein can reduce the buildup of gas - but I haven't taken that one to the lab yet...

ginger helps break down proteins, so it's a great thing to have a cup of ginger tea after a protein heavy meal.

I have occasoinal problems, but no more frequently now that I"ve changed my diet.

You changed your diet to what?

sorry that wasn't clear, just changed to eating clean when I started watching my weight, began weight training, and drinking protein shakes. I've always had the occasional flatulance problem, I never thought much about it, but it's probably because I'm somewhat lactose intolerant since I usually get very little milk products. Though I dunno, could be a big variety of things that cause the sporadic daily uncomfort. So for me a diet change hasn't had a big effect on this issue, except for softer stools

Ive been getting a lot of extra protein lately, especially from shakes and my ass has been rediculous....

Its to the point that its embarassing cause im literally passing gas every 2-3 minutes. I eat about 24oz of broccoli a day, so I thought that was it.... I guess its just the extra protein.... I dont know how to get the protein I need and avoid all of the toxic gasses......

I am no fart expert but again, I've found that spreading the protein intake over time has done wonders for me. Instead of consuming a two scoop shake I'll have one scoop now and another scoop 60 to 90 minutes later.

You guys are worrying me with your flatulence issues that pertain to protein. I plan to start having whey protein shakes.

I would highly recommend "Digestive Enzymes" supplements, this will allow you to break down and absorb the extra protein that your diet should already consist of. This should help with your flatulence as well :tu:

I use Swiss brand digestive enzymes. Jamieson also produces it as well.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one getting arse problems from increased protein uptake, my main concern was with increased darkness of my faeces in the last week, the smell was truly horrendous too, but then when I was about to use my mixing bottle this morning the smell from the last nights protein shake was errily familiar, and similar though less pooey, to what I was smelling on the toilet.

I HOPE that's the problem anyway, not the other problem (which could be blood in the faeces), I'm not suffereing any pain though and it would be a big coincidence for this to happen and it not be related to my protein intake just a few days after starting.

I totally agree with the earlier responses. You need to cut back on your protein intake (in the form of shakes), or space out your protein throughout the day.

The paint in my house was beginning to peel, and the children would cry when I'd polish off a whey drink with some chicken and broccoli (how could I have NOT seen this coming?).

Now I spread it out a bit more during the day. Do not have more than 1 serving of protein (be it whey drink or chicken, tuna etc) within a 90 minute to 2 hour period.

And ditch the milk for protein drinks. This is what did it for me. I changed from chocolate (which I drank with milk) to orange (which I drink with water and ice). BIG difference.

I get to sleep in the same bed as my wife now...it's really comfy.

for the first month after I started using whey it was like I had my own tuba quartet following me around but eventually it went away. well, mostly. it's down to just the one tuba now and that's usually only when I first get up in the morning.
