how about offering some sort of live chat system? i realize that this may be the exact opposite of what the goals of the forum are, ie keeping a record of the good stuff people post, but if you offer it only certain times during the week for a few hours to promote and foster LIVE interaction between members around the globe, it would be kinda cool. this could be done with some simple java applet(tons of them available) or even an irc daemon running on one of your boxes that is started via cron then killed a few hours later.

I think while it is running, his bandwith will go to crap.

it would just be text-based chat, not multimedia audio and video! iveseen irc servers with 5k users do less than 1mb/sec. and with john moving the site to a colo facility, he should have ample pipe available. and if not, im always ready to donate bandwidth out of my datacenter!

Why not just designate an irc network and channel?

that would promote a lack of control, and more people may visit the chat room and idle there instead of hitting the forum. gotta keep people coming here, and add extra services!

That's a thought, corbint. We do that on my pet board and it always goes over well. Maybe John will consider having that when he moves the server :)

I've been thinking about this, but first I need to get the new server finished and get everything moved and settled in. So much going on right now I can't really think about this at the moment, but it will almost undoubtedly happen at some point. :)

I'll second that.

There are java chat clients that are based on irc channels. If someone were to create an irc channel for this site, it could also be posted on the site itself through one of those java clients.

Hey John! Any chance of this happening still in the future?

It is a really neat feature, and while not necessary COULD be a good addition to the site...no pressure man, this site is superb to begin with and you already do so much, but the thought just crossed my mind so I wanted to share it. Fortunately there was already a thread on it so I did not bother starting a new one.

until it happens, my journal (http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?goto=lastpost&t=12365)seems to be about the same thing

Yeah I noticed, (thats actually one of two things that made me think of the chat room idea) if we just keep doing that you are on pace to hit 1000 pages in that journal by next year...it will need its own server!

Hey John! Any chance of this happening still in the future?Nah, I've decided against it. Members who want to chat in real time can do so in any number ways.

Thats great John. You are right about being many other ways to chat and I think we all have pretty good "back and forth" going already within certain threads on the board. Thanks for considering it. :tu:
