So, with half life 2 coming out next month, it's time to get rid of my geforce 3. I have 512 ram and a barton 2500+. Price is a huge priority. The card has to cost less than $100, and frankly close to $50 would be nice. I see that the geforce 5200's are around $50...

The 5200's are a POS. I hate to break it to you, but you won't find anything capable of running HL2 well for under $150ish. The cheapest card that would probably run it decent is the Radeon 9600 Pro or XT. Those are around $130-$175 though.

In fact Doom3 plays on my system - not well (and that's being objective :)), but it's playable with all settings turned down. From what I can gather HL2 is a bit less stressful on hardware than Doom3, and even if a 5200 is crap for these days it can still dance circles around a GF3 :D I'm not looking for 1280X960 and AA or anything like that, but I need a fluid framerate at 8X6...

I have a GF4 Ti4200 128mb that served me well when I played the doom demo. I played at 1024x768 and had the settings at medium I think and it was perfect for me. I am positive my rig will be able to play hl2 without a problem. The 5200 should be fine too. And for the price if its THAT bad(once again its objective) you can always throw it into a diff pc and pick up a better card.

I'm with tricker on this one.

5200fx sucks. You can get a ATI 9800 non pro from new egg for $146.

This is a great card for the money and you can even flash it to pro if you want more performance.

I say, save a few extra bucks to get something way better.

Either one of those will do WAY better than a fx5200. 1st one being the best of course.
