View Full Version : Update on new server
John Stone February 10th, 2004, 03:57 PM Because this forum has grown so quickly, I'm going to have to co-locate another server to handle the load/bandwidth requirements. I may need to take the forums down occasionally over the next week or so as I prepare for the move. Once the move has been completed, this forum should run much faster than it does now. Thanks for your patience as I work to improve the site!
I'll keep this thread updated as needed.
corbint February 10th, 2004, 05:03 PM im sure i echo everyone when i say thanks for the hard work put into the forums, and the cheddar you are spending on servers and what not john. we do appreciate it!
Andrew M February 10th, 2004, 05:22 PM Congratulations on being a victim of your own success. Long may it continue.
Andrew.
Safrax February 12th, 2004, 09:40 PM I'm curious about the new server. Were you forced to use Gentoo or did you choose to use it? I happen to be a bit of a Gentoo evangelist and absolutely love to see a site that I like sporting a powered by Gentoo logo (or forum thread).
John Stone February 12th, 2004, 11:48 PM Thanks everyone, I got a ton of work done on the server tonight. This weekend is looking like a strong possibility for deployment! :) I'll have an update in the morning on my main site.

I love Gentoo, and chose to use it. I cut my teeth on SCO and Irix way back in the early 90s and then I discovered Slackware Linux and BSD. I continued to use Slack for all my Linux boxes for the longest time, but then I found out about Gentoo. The last few Linux servers I've built have been Gentoo machines. I think Gentoo is the coolest Linux distro I've ever used. Portage is a fantastic PMS, and I love that you can really get under the hood, which was one of the things I liked best about Slack. I never cared for Redhat or any of the other "glossy" distros, but Gentoo is really something else. I think it's one of the best things to happen to the Linux O/S in a long time.
John Stone February 13th, 2004, 08:37 PM New server is done!! I'll post a complete update on my main site tomorrow morning, but right now I'm going to go have my well-deserved "cheat" meal with Lisa. Pizza and wine, here I come!
John Stone February 14th, 2004, 04:14 PM Lisa will be home any minute, and then I'll be leaving to take the new server to the co-location facility. I'll probably be shutting the forum down in a couple of hours while I move the data to the new server (it shouldn't take too long). As soon as that's done, I'll make the DNS changes and within an hour of that you should be seeing the new server. I'll update my main site and this site as needed.
I hope everyone is having a good day, see you later!
John Stone February 14th, 2004, 08:20 PM If you are reading this then you are on the new server. Please let me know if anything seems amiss, otherwise enjoy!

Great job John.
Thanks for making it better. :tu:
John Stone February 18th, 2004, 11:49 PM Thanks, it's great to hear these comments because I was really hoping the new server/increased bandwidth would make the forums noticeably quicker and more enjoyable to use. I'm also very pleased with the speed, and so far no adverse technical issues related to the move have cropped up.
Enjoy! :D
MYBAD? February 19th, 2004, 06:53 AM I've noticed Picture threads are MUCH MUCH quicker now. Cheers John.
