Yes, it will. Drinking any kind of alcohol regularly will severely hamper your weight loss. The amount of carbs has nothing to do with it - if you must think like Atkins, think of alcohol as the Super-Carb. As long as it's in your system, your body doesn't metabolize much at all until it's gone, and it's absorbed instantly - doesn't even have to go through your intestines. It also slows your metabolism independently of its ability to promote fat storage. For people cutting, getting drunk is pretty much the Perfect Storm.

I am an advocate of completely eliminating alcohol while you're cutting, but some people say the occasional drink or two doesn't do any harm. Certainly, though, tequila every night would be a really good way to slow down your progress a lot.

Of course, it depends on the amount of tequila and a lot of other factors, but I'd say yes, it will slow it down.

Every night? That's around 700 calories a week, added to all the negative effects alcohol has on losing fat. It's also a sign of alcoholism (if you require 1 drink a day).

I'd highly consider toning it down to 2 nights, max. It also depends where you are starting and want to finish and in how much time.

Don't despair! If you need tequila every night to go to sleep, there are probably larger problems at work here, and this is an opporunity to make some positive changes. Good luck!

I guess I have a small problem, and should cut back. It just doesnt seem like 3 or 4 shots a nite would do much harm. In my case cutting back to a few shots would be an improvement. Ill see how it goes.

Wow, 3 or 4 drinks a NIGHT? You said 1.

That's not only like 2500 calories/week but it's very unhealthy.

If you're drinking that much, the good news is, just by quitting drinking, you could probably drop 15-20 pounds in a couple of months, easy.

You have a very serious alcohol problem that you need to address. Not only does it do nothing for your current weight loss goals, but in the long term you are killing yourself. Have you ever seen a liver that is hard and rubbery from long term alcohol abuse? The liver is the only organ in the human body for which there is no machine that can at least temporarily replace it while you are waiting for a transplant, which they do not give to alcoholics. You need to take some serious steps about this problem you have, or it will kill you.

Probably you are feeling a bit of an onslaught from everyone's remarks here, but though you might have a number of personal friends who approach alcohol with the same feeling of fun and relaxation you do, it is not typical. And the level of consumption you are doing is destructive of your body and long term health.

Good luck with your workout and foodplan. Keep posting here. This is a great support group--it has certainly helped me move forward in my lifestyle changing goals. And everyone takes an interest in everyone's progress here whether it moves by leaps and bounds or moves at a snail's pace. And I am sure everyone here will be interested in your progress. I know I will be.

If you are considering modifying your approach to alcohol, you are probably already aware that it is not easy. :p Regular consumption of alcohol becomes habitual and addictive. Tapering off usually doesn't work by itself.

It is a difficult process and it is even more difficult to do on your own. For some guidelines, you might want to check out Alcoholic Anonymous meetings.

It doesn't mean you're an alcoholic and you don't have to be an alcoholic to go; but you will hear others talking about how they addressed the challenges of reducing their alchohol consumption. Everyone's experience is unique just as developing a good food and workout plan. These meetings are truly anonymous, there is nothing to join, you never have to speak, talk to anyone or even identify yourself.

You can call an AA chapter where you live (anonymously) and ask for the time and location of a meeting that is really big (i.e. 50-100 people.) That way you can just duck in the back where no one will notice you and eavesdrop for a while. You might pick a few pointers. :claplow:
