I always thought my 70% of max for me was 120bpm based on a Max HR of 172bpm..
I'm 47 year old male 199lbs

But I went to :
http://www.naturalphysiques.com/tools.php?itemid=2
and it's telling me my 60% is 137bpm 147bpm is 70% at a 80bpm resting HR..
Have I been to easy on myself running a 116-122 HR on the treadmill for 30-45 min. daily ???

Help I'm confused!!!!..

There are different methods of measuring heart rate. He shows many of them in that link.

Yea I saw the two ways.. which only vary 3bpm of MAX(172-175) I guess what my question is what is my 70% if my max is 172-175bpm.. I thought it was 172 x 70% = 120 but his calculation is comes up with 147bpm

Which is correct ? in fact the treamill tells me 121bpm is my 70%.. I'm confused!

The calculator takes your max hr - resting hr * % + resting hr. Mine is 182-60=122*.70=85.4 + 60=145

I don't know if that is the correct way to calculate the 70%, but that is the way the calculator is figuring it.

Based on the most common equation I could find:

MHR = 220 - AGE

Therefore,

MHR = 173

Target Heart Rate Range

Min: 0.65 * 173 = 113
Max: 0.75 * 173 = 130

There ya go. No confusion.

P.S. You can also go by "feel". If I have trouble carrying on a conversation (which on the treadmill is like... 3.5 MPH @ 8~10% incline) I know I'm doing it right. The treadmill has a heart rate sensor, so I have had plenty of practice knowing when I'm in the target zone.

Yea that's the figures I come up with also(app.120bpm)...So why does the program on the web page about come up with 147bpm ???

Jeeezzzz I hope I've been working hard enough!!.. Dang :) tomorrow I'm going to get on that treadmill and set it on the HR program and go for 30 min. at 147bpm and see what happens :)..

He is using the Karvonen method which takes resting heart rate into account. It makes a big difference in the final calculation.

Not that much.. it only changed 2-3 bpm when I entered 0 or 80bpm .. I think the software is flawed

Whooops Jesse1 you are right!!! I must of been asleep at the wheel this morning :)..
It working great!!

So I would guess that it's more correct when using your resting HR in the math..

So I need to bump up my cardio... Thanks All!!

Using a calculator :

220-47=173x.7=121.1
or
220-47=173-80=93x.7=65.10=80=145.10

Yep your right..so I've been cardio'ing at 40-45% HR.. OH MY GOD!! no wonder my fat loss has slowed from the first month when I was doing cardio for 45-60min. at 135-145 HR... Boy I'm glad I'm here on this site!! or I'd never figure it out.. Time to step it up!! :tucool:

Before you change anything, there are those who say that the standard method (220-age) is the one to use and others who like the Karvonen. If you don't feel like you are working hard on the cardio then go to the Karvonen. If however you do feel like you are working hard, but just not losing enough weight, then check the diet.

Sound advise!! thankyou!

I have been feeling like I'm not working hard enough on the cardio but I was going by the 122bpm so I figured thats what it feels like to burn fat not muscle :) guess I was hardly burning anything!

All of this is why I don't really go by heart rate. I wear the monitor so I have an idea of how hard I'm working, but I let my body tell me how hard it's going to work, not some formula.
