View Full Version : Time before metabolism falls...

Hi there to everyone... I was hoping to get some useful advice here, like I always get... Ok, so here's my problem... Currently I'm fasting, so this is usually my typical day...

I would get up at 4:30 in the morning, cook my meal and then eat...
I would usually have brown rice, protein source, like let's say fish or chicken, some eggs, skim milk and some breads. After eating, (I no this doesn't sound too good..) I lay down again on my bed, trying to get some sleep again or watch tv.

Then I would start to be active at around 10:00 AM or 11:00AM. At this time until the afternoon, I love to walk a lot, this is like my cardio, I try to walk wherever I go, then 3 times a week, I lift weights at the afternoon.
Then at around 6:00 PM, I would have my meal, it usually contains brown rice, protein source, breads and etc... I always try to eat clean even during fasting. And also try and manage not to binge.

On a typical day, I would eat 5-6 small meals a day containing about 300-400 calories. But during fasting, since I usually intake only 3 meals, I eat quite big, around 600-700 calories per meal. I'm not use to eating large so this sound big to me.

That's the brief story of me... Any comments or suggestion? Now my questions are...
First, this fasting last for 1 month, do you think my metabolism will fall drasticly?

Second, the exercise that I do everyday (which is walking) will it help burn some fat instead of muscle? Cause I heard that long low-intensity cardio burns more fat instead of muscles... Just curiuos here...

And the last, I just want to share some strange phenomena, hoping that anyone could explain... Not eating or drinking for approximately 12 hours is not the best way to build muscle (everybody knows that), but strange to me cause it seems that my arm and chest are getting bigger, like they're getting pump, and I'm lifting... could it be just water retention? And in the morning, my stomach seems loose, but late in through the day, it seems tight,.. what could be causing this?

Sorry for the long thread... thanks for reading and hope to here your reply...

Hi there,

This is my first post, so I hope I'm not breaking any unspoken rules about newbies offering advice. . . if so, sorry!

It sounds to me like your metabolism shouldn't fall too drastically over the next month since you're eating the same number of calories. Yes, it's less than ideal to have three huge meals clumped into the night-time/early morning as opposed to evenly spaced small meals, but since you're taking in the same amount of food you're not scaring your body into full-fledged starvation mode like you would during a full-fledged fast with no food at all.

To give things a little kick, is it possible for you to break your cardio/walking into two shorter sessions spread out during the day? Also, rather than going to sleep right after your big breakfast, could you stay awake then and take a nap later in the day? Ideally, I'd try to go walking right after breakfast rather than sleep, have a short nap in the middle of the day, and walk again in the evening before dinner. Someone else might have better suggestions though-- just thought I'd jump in with that. :)

Good luck!

Hi there too,...
Hey, I don't believe if there's any unspoken rule of newbies giving some advice, and I really appreciate if anyone gives advice or commnets to me. Anyway, here's some of my improvment to my diet...

Get up at 3-4, have some small meal (coffee and bread usually..)
Cook my meal and eat it at 5AM (brown rice, veggies and protein source plus skim milk)
Stay awake and do something...

Take a nap at lunch
Then in the afternoon, I'll be doing some cardio or weight training

At 6PM, have small meal again (fruit, coffee or protein shake and some bread again... I love breads)
At around 7PM, have my dinner, usually brown rice and protein source

Well, that's it... more advice would be appreciatable... :D

I'm somewhat confused - how can you be fasting if you're eating 3 "big" meals of around 600-700 calories each? Doesn't sound like a fast to me ...

Oh, I'm sorry, guess I did'nt tell you earlier... I'm fasting for religious purpose, I'm a muslim, and it's the month of Ramadhan... So we are not suppose to eat nor drink anything from sunrise (which is around 5:45 AM) (until sunset which is also around 5:45 PM)...
Sorry for confusing you.. That's why I can eat 3-4 meals.
