Everyone,

I found a article on BB.Com that described a method developed by the military. Basically you measure your waist above your navel then measure your neck. You then subtract the difference. You then cross reference the number against the military chart for your gender and height. I found it to be pretty accurate based on the BF% I had taken by a professional at my gym. The link to the article and PDF with chart is below!

looks about right...

based on the results I got it told me my BF was 12%

My bodyfat scale told me I was at 12.3% this morning.....

Mine said that I was 27.44% :(

I've made it into a formula on Excel if anyone would like to put it in their own sheets...

Please note, measurements must be in inches.

=(86.01*(LOG10(abdomen - neck)))-(70.041*(LOG10(height)))+36.76

There you go.

Spot on. Unfortunately....

my scales say I am 14% body fat. tried this method. 14% body fat. Humph. Hoped to be lower. At least I know that my scales are right! Now I have to work a bit harder....

I feel with you... Mine was 27.19%

Thanks! I changed the formula to take centimeters and have put it into my food log for daily measurements. Since everbody's measurements seem to be correct I won't bother buying other equipment for this I think...

I used to have to measure my troops for this method when I was in the Army. Only tip I can give is to take each measurement 3 times. All three measurements should be within a half inch tolerance.

I always thought it was funny to see my sergeants at the gym only doing neck exercises.

Awesome!

Speaking of that, does anyone happen to know what the formula is that is being used on this site?

http://www.healthcentral.com/cooltools/CT_Fitness/bodyfat1.cfm

I'm using it the value it gives me in my spreadsheet, but I'm tired of having to go there and re-enter all the data every time. I'd rather just have a cell in my spreadsheet calculate it.

weird, the formula is about 4% higher than all readings Ive had done, both using electrical impedence and measurements. weird!

I was always hoping that my Tanita BF scale was reading high, but after logging on to MyBodyComp.com and the Military Method I get the same number each time.....ugh, guess I just have that much farther to go.

Hmm.. Can this be right? I'm 6"1' tall, weigh 191 pounds, and have 28% bodyfat?? This means I have 139 of lean mass and 53 pounds of fat! Does this seem right?

I had to read through the whole 28 page article to discover that for women, the reference number is your waist PLUS YOUR HIP minus your neck.

I'm surprised that weight did not factor into their model.

I think i mentioned this in a previous thread, but I have programmed a calculator for the military meathod stated above on my website for those who dislike math! http://www.shattered-sorcery.com/bodyfat.html

How odd. My tanita scale says 25% (I know it's too high, but still...)

The military method doesn't even give me a value. I'm off the scale for my height, at below 10%. Using Berran's calc, I got 7.5%.

Hmm.. I've always had a skinny waist, I don't believe either of these figures. Nice way to keep track of changes though.

I'm not even on the chart, stupid navy! All it can tell me is that I'm somewhere below 9. :(

Edit: According to http://www.shattered-sorcery.com/bodyfat.html I made 6.5%. :o I think I need to reconsider why I'm cutting.

Is this more accurate on an empty stomack in the morning, or should i have eaten something, i get a slight difference in ab measurements.

I'm also a bit confused by all these methods:
Healthcentral says 9.1%
YMCA 11.5%
Navy 16.9%
Weltman & Tran 28.6%

All results are based on the same set of circumference measurements.

Does anyone have advice on which set to trust, or is calipers the only way?

I always use this website to gauge my fatloss http://www.he.net/~zone/prothd2.html Its so easy!!! With all those complex methods out there, I thought that this was a little to easy, but the other day I had my body fat professionally taken and the website I use was about .3% different. Works for me  :tu:
