Today my mom says that 'I eat like a bird'. That hurts my feelings a little since I really am not, about 2,000+ calories every day. I eat a lot of chicken, turkey fruits and veggies. She told my sister that when I get hungry I just eat some apple sauce (I do sometimes as an inbetween 6 meal a day snack). I weigh 168 and are 6'2" and she thinks that I am losing too much weight (maybe around 1-2 pounds a week or so). Anyway how do you respond to something like this? :(

....this is what I call negative motavation

No, in all honesty, point her to these forums. :)

This is what I call ... my life. I come from a big, traditional Italian family. Every meal has 62 courses. The house is always stocked with crap. Nothing is ever cooked without butter, whole cheese, whole milk, or being fried in some way.

They thought I was sick (like, terminally ill, no kidding) when I started losing weight. Of course, I was losing weight at a staggering pace, but it was done healthy and in conjunction with my doctor and a on a well known trainer's regime.

What you'll have to do is sit them down and explain the theory behind the methods to them. I did that not so long ago when the opportunity arose, and they have since backed off. Now, whenever I go visit the fam', they call first and ask, "you can eat *insert dish here*, can't you?" Usually I just reserve my cheat meal for them and make them happy. I can't eat in the quantities I used to, but at the very least I get catch less crap for my lifestyle since they no longer think I'm dying of herpesgonnasyphylaids.

It's all about the communication. Help them understand and I'm sure they'll support you. Took me a while to pick up on that one (Italian grandma's can be very stubborn and frustrating to have serious conversation with that doesn't involve food or babies) but talking to them eventually solved the problem, more or less.

I guess this depends on how you are carrying that weight. To me it seems a little low, but I have always weighed heavier than people my own size. My husband is just at six foot and weighs 185, he is slim, so I wonder what you actually look like. Maybe some pics. But the calorie count sounds right, so if you are one of those people who just don't weigh much, and are heavier than your weight sounds, don't worry about it. You are the only person who has to be happy with yourself.

Thanks for the replies guys, I will talk to her about it.

I am starting to think that a lot of people who are overweight, or just eat a lot more food think that they are normal and the people that do lose weight and try to get slim and ripped are the 'others' and out of the normal.

If the trend of obesity continues to rise in America ( I don't have the stats but it has grown a ton since the 80's), in about 50-100 years or so when tons of people are fat it will not be the obese people that are stared at but the in the shape people that will if you know what I mean. ;) It just seems like overweight it becoming a part of life for America, we are changing hospitals, airports, cars, etc...because there are so many overweight people...if this makes any sense.

Anyway, thanks for the replies :claphigh:

[EDIT] He is the picture of me, I weigh about 170 in this picture. I am going to start my bulking soon but want a little more fat gone....my goal isn't to be lightweight but to weight like 185 just not fat if you know what I mean :jumping:

If you used to be heavy and that is all she knows you as it probably does seem as though you are very skinny to her. Three years ago at Thanksgiving I was down around 215 and got a lot of comments even though I was still considerably overweight. But to my family I was 'skinny'.

Of course, here I am three years later working my ass off (literally) trying to get back down to there. I'll do it and I won't let their, or anyone else's, comments stop me.

I think that's a part of it. The rest is, quite frankly in my opinion, jealousy - I mean, it's got to suck to have your potential shoved in your face when you see someone who's fit versus someone who's discipline is nil and whose body is not fit at all.

A clean bulking cycle will do you wonders. You don't look too thin... you look just about right, perhaps the body fat could even be lowered a smidge. Good luck... and don't let anyone discourage you.

My parents started to notice me losing weight before I hurt my ankle a couple of months ago.
I explained to my mom and now she has lost nearly 35 pounds since the beginning of May. She thanks me frequently. Now I need to get myself back to normal. Still working on my father. He's getting there.

great work, you have what looks to be very decent muscle tone in your abs. It is hard to tell in the pic but I see what looks to be like a very well developed abdomen. I am glad you will start bulking soon, you are looking like you should just about be done losing. Good luck and like everyone said, send her here.

Eating small frequent meals throughout the day is eating like a bird, so your mom is right about that part.

But you're right about what you're doing.

Like girlcop1, I was wondering if perhaps you were a little light, but your pic looks fantastic. I completely understand that you might want to lose a little more, and agree that you're close to being ready for bulking a bit.

From everything you've written, and from your pic, you seem to be 100% perfectly on track. I hope to be where you are in a few months.

Great work! :tucool:

Today my mom says that 'I eat like a bird'.

Birds eat up to 50% of their body weight per day. In perspective, that would put you at probably eating over 80 lbs of food in one day.
