I've been wondering how much cardio I should do for best results...so I thought back to the time I was in the best shape....a few years ago, playing basketball in high school.

Our practices consisted of one 2 hour practice in the morning, & one 2 hour practice after school. For the first two weeks of practice, we didn't even touch a basketball. The coach would sit several trash cans out around the court.....and we'd basically run until we puked (and probably 75% of the team or more did).

I remember a few times I got blurry vision & felt like I was going to pass out...even the best runners on our basketball team (the cross country runners), had major problems, puking, etc...

Looking at this now...it did get us in shape..but this couldn't have possibly been healthy..going to the extremes like that?? Probably dangerous . . . Right??

I don't think recurring vomiting is a part of any sane exercise plan, so I wouldn't have to say... no.

I'm sure youll throw up if you go to any extreme on working out, even a stationary bike.

I'm sure it was still better for you than sitting around all day.

When I wrestled in high school, the coaches drove us like slaves. A 2.5 mile sprint to "warm up", followed by calesthenic drills, every once in a while they brought in an aerobics instructor. Then we practiced for around two hours. By the time we were done, we'd been at it for up to 3.5 hours, and the wrestling practice room was not air conditioned. It had a garage door on the back so we could get air flow in there.

People would be wretching their guts out during the opening sprint because if one person didn't keep up, the team was punished as a whole. So you kept up or you paid the price (the team had its own methods of "punishment"). We had to ask to leave the wrestling room or use the john. Heaven forbid you did something wrong and the team had to do a 50/50 (50 pushups, 50 situps). Again, one person screws up, the team pays for it. Then you'd have the team on your ass again (the whole punish-by-peer system again).

We were required to practice with the team six times a week (Saturdays included) and Sunday you were to run a minimum of five miles. I was in incredible shape back then... but the price was high and knowing now what I do, I know it was not healthy looking back.

All I have to show for from those days are two bad knees and a scar on my forehead.
