View Full Version : Questionable Foods....
TylerGred Sun, October 10th, 2004, 09:40 PM Got a couple of questions about some certain foods that are in my current diet, that I want to run by you guys. First off, I eat Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches. I use Jiff creamy and I use low sugar jelly on wheat bread. I looked at the nutritional guide and compared Jiff to natural and it looked about the same. Is there something I'm missing? Should I use natural peanut butter, or should I just throw that out of my diet until I cut down to my desired fat loss level?
Also regarding my bread. I'm eating this brand I believe is called Natural Oats Honey. Once again I compared the facts to other stronger wheat breads and it was better in most areas (such as cal. per slice). However, the bread doesn't look like wheat at all. It looks like white, even though it states wheat. Can anyone set me straight on whether this is a good bread to use in my diet (if you are familiar with it). Basically I want to make sure I'm not missing something in the ingredients section that is killing my fat loss. Thanks in advance.
DeafNgari Sun, October 10th, 2004, 10:04 PM I tend to avoid jelly altogether personally. As far as peanut butter goes, yeah the nutrition facts might look the same in terms of cals and whatnot, but the unnatural stuff goes through substanially higher amounts of processing. A pretty good rule of thumb is the more processed a food is the worse it is for you. More processed foods have their components changed... ie simiplied carbs, altered fats, stripped vitamins and minerals etc...
As fars as bread goes... I eat a ton. Picking out a good bread is kinda tough sometimes. You want to look for when where flour is either not in the ingrediants or is pretty far down. The bread I buy most often has I think 7 ingredients ahead of flour. Crack wheat or water are pretty good 1st ingredients to look for. Just because a bread is "wheat" bread doesn't mean that is going to be healthy. Most wheat bread is barely better for you than regular old white.
pixie Sun, October 10th, 2004, 10:12 PM Jif peanut butter has trans-fats. You can tell this because if you look at the ingredients it contains hydrogenated oils. Processed PB also contains extra sugar and stabilizers and other such unnecessary junk. If you look at the ingredients of nat PB it has usually 1-2 items listed: peanuts (and sometimes salt). PB can be in your cutting diet if you use it in moderation because it contains healthy fats- but stick w/ natural PB.
About the bread, you want to look at the ingredients again and look for 100% whole wheat or 100% stoneground whole wheat. You may want to look into switching you current bread for sprouted whole wheat bread.
Look at the ingredients of your bread options- steer away from the words 'enriched' flour, 'high fructose corn syrup', 'hydrogenated oil' (of any type), and any type of excess sugar.
Also, the jelly probably isn't doing too much harm, but it probably isn't doing you any good either, try it without and see how that goes. It is just giving you empty calories and simple sugar.
These changes will help you in the long run.

Aarghh!
wheat bread = white bread
Come on, guys! What's bread made out of? Corn, rye, rice? Most (white) bread is made out of wheat. Think about it. Bread. Wheat. Wheat bread. The same thing.
Like nearly all bread, “wheat bread” is made from wheat flour, and not necessarily from whole-wheat flour. Whole-wheat bread is made from the entire wheat kernel, including bran and germ. (source) (http://www.pccnaturalmarkets.com/health/Food_Guide/Whole_Wheat_Bread.htm)
If it's whole wheat bread, it'll say so. Otherwise, you're getting wheat bread made with plain old regular refined wheat flour (also known as white flour)
It's got to be at least once a month I point this out to someone.
silviuch Mon, October 11th, 2004, 02:21 AM Personally, I'd just take out the peanut butter, jelly, and bread out all together...
There are plenty of other sources to get your EFA's...
There are better fruits to replace jelly...
And, it seems like every bread out there sucks and hurts fat loss
inurb Mon, October 11th, 2004, 01:50 PM The bread you should be eating is this:
www.alvaradostreetbakery.com
Check out the ingredients....
INGREDIENTS: Organically grown sprouted wheat berries, filtered water, organically grown grain mixture (consisting of millet, rye flakes, corn meal, rolled oats, barley flakes), pure honey, unsulphured molasses, lecithin, wheat gluten, sea salt, fresh yeast.
that's what you want in your bread.
The Peanut Butter you should be eating is:
Crazy Richard's Peanut Butter
Skip the jelly and use fruit preserve that doesn't have any added sugar.
I am assuming that you aren't on a cut whilst eating the above mentioned items.
