Hi,

As the title suggests I've become really gassy since starting working out a week ago :o . I'm curious as to what it is, at first I thought it might be the protein mix (with water) but I cut that out for a day and was just the same.

My basic diet is...

6am
protein mix
cereal

9:30am
cereal
2 * sausage sandwich (no butter on brown bread)

1pm
jacket potatoe
large salad

4:30 pm
pasta with tinned tomatoes

9pm
chicken
salad
protein mix

That's pretty much an average day (with alot of water). I work from 7am which is why im up at 6. I used to have 3 protein mixes but it's an expensive hobby. I also probably dont eat as much as I should, but im just never that hungry.

Any ideas what's causing my gassy state? There's nothing alarming there.

Thanks,
Adrian

p.s. Sorry i dont post more, but im not knowledgable about this stuff really, so I just leave it to the pro's.

I think you're more likely to get your diet critiqued than figure out what is causing the gas!

Actually the answer may be in your first sentence 'since starting working out'. I find just the act of working out to be a somewhat gaseous experience, particularly cardio. To the utter enjoyment of my wife, it seems to be most obnoxious just before bedtime.

How is your fiber intake? Has it increased suddenly? If so, the body needs time to adjust to higher intakes of fiber. The other thing to bear in mind is that fiber soaks up moisture in the intestines. If there is no moisture for it to soak up it can make you gassy too, so you have to make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids.

Don't hold your breath.

Um, I mean learn to hold your breath. And teach your family to do the same. Since eating a diet with a fibre intake in the normal range, I've been quite impossible to be around; a regular wind tunnel. I talked to my doctor about it, and he recommended I take something containing simethecone several times a day. I purchased gas relief tablets at Wal-Mart, and they seem to help a little bit, but I have to always carry them around with me. FYI, this has been going on about six months. :d_redface

I was uber uber uber uber gassy for a while. It has gotten world's better. I think turkey lunch meat was my biggest culprit. Play with your diet. Eliminate things for a couple days and see what happens. Part of it is often the increased fiber intake. I know my roomie joined me in eating healthy and whatnot when he came back up for school and he got really gassy too.

I've been having the same problem and it's not just the volume, but the intensity! The volume of gas I can deal with, I'm not really embarassed about letting go of a lot of air, but as you know there's quite a difference between "all bark and no bite" and "silent but deadly". I've been polluting my nearby area with rotten egg smell for a while and I'm getting a little self-conscious about it. I am starting to get a little paranoid that people may have mentioned it to one another behind my back. I was thinking about buying a fan for my office (cubicle) so when people come in, they're not assaulted.

I'm reasonably certain in my case that it is the fiber. I've experimented a little bit with the foods of my diet by eliminating one at a time, and seeing the effect for a 2-week period. So far I've ruled out Splenda as the cause (one of my first suspicions). I tried the same experiment with fiber, but I assumed I wasn't getting enough, so I upped my fiber and the gas got worse. Unfortunately I can't eliminate fiber entirely, I'm going to get more than the average person gets because of the quality of the food I'm eating - but I'm not supplementing with additional fiber any more. I don't track my fiber intake like I do calories & macros, so I don't know exactly how much I get. I suspect it's somewhere in between what's recommended, and what the average person gets.

I haven't tried taking any products specifically for this problem - I will look into products containing simethicone, though; that's a new one for me. Thanks for the tip.

If anyone has tried other products and been successful at reducing gas, share!

My wife and I eat bunches of broccoli and cauliflower, and I could float the GoodYear Blimp. It's been this way for years. Doctor just shrugs his shoulders. Says it comes with eating lots of vegies.
