i only use bike, i find any of the other main ones (running, rowing, walker things) put more effort on my muscles and my joints than they do my cardio, so i stick to the bike.

I don't do hiit, my bike isn't very suitable for it (it doesn't use a chain and gets stiff).

I use to run 3 miles at a decent pace in the beginning then noticed I was losing too much muscle mass.

Switched to HIIT thx to John and have been on the eliptical for a good 6 months. I prefer the eliptical b/c its easier on the knees and no more shin splints.

My routing is as follows:
3 min warmup @ 7 on the resistance scale
30 sec @ 15 resistance and increase speed as well
1 min @ 10 resistance
Do it 14 times followed by a 5 min cool down.

I been doing it on the bike because shin splints are owning me. I need to get the money together and get me an eliptical.

I do it on the bike and running. IMO nothing matches the intensity of sprinting. I run on grass so its not too bad.

I also do it on the elliptical because it's too cold outside to sprint. What's your heart rate during the 30 sec session? I go 30 sec as hard as I can go and normally get around 170-176 BPM which is 90-95% max and then do 90 sec of minimal effort which sets my heart rate back down to 155-160 BPM. I think the actual trick to HIIT cardio is giving 100% balls to the wall effort during that 30 sec period. Right now I do 6 of the 30 sec sessions and my quads feel as though they're gonna explode! I'm truley whooped afterwards. People look at me weird for going so hard on the elliptical. They have NOOO idea!:)

I use a stationary bike and a treadmill in the winter (I live in Colorado). I think I'll switch out to the mountain bike and some running outdoors when spring/summer rolls around. And a buddy of mine just started playing racquetball, so we'll have some games of that, too.

BTW, what the hell are shin splints? I've heard this expression all my life and still don't know what they are.

I currently use and would highly recommend an elliptical trainer. Its a great workout and you can really use your arms to get your heartrate up. It gives you a good overall workout for your whole body. You can pedal forward or backward to target different muscles in your legs too. Its also easy on the joints. :spaz:

I am not sure what my heart rate is during the 30 sec but i can tell you that i can NOT go on for more than 30 sec. Ya, I get weird looks from people when my shirt is drenched in sweat and all the other people on the machines are chillin while reading a magazine. But I get my music goin and zone them out! :D

Shin splints argh the bain of my running life. I'm not sure if i've got this totally right but as far as i know its a pain in the muscle just outside both your shin bones. I'm a heavy git so assume its coz thoes muscles dont like throwing 230lb around for more then a feew feet. I think i'm going to give the elipitical a go aith 30 secs intesne and then 90 at 60%. Cheers for the info lads :tu:

Guys it is amazing to me the strange looks I get also. Either on the elliptical machine or treadmill. I often see people reading magazines and newspapers hardly breaking a sweat if any at all. I just ignore them and continue to push it to my MP-3 player. If you don't have one it is a must have for your HIIT sessions. I do my 21 minutes and jump off exhausted and by the time I cool-down and dress I see many of the same people still gliding away or either they have switched machines. I plan on getting a training certification when I complete my transformation so I can educate some of these people. You can check my progress in the post your pictures forum. Peace and keep up the good work everybody!

I cross country skate ski, total body work out. Its a great workout and constantly varied with different snow conditions, temperature and terrain.

I am in Montana, USA and ironically get more quality training in the winter than on my bike in the summer when the weather is nice.
