I was reading through the "All the Whey Review" thread, and didn't see any responses from women. Do any of you drink protein shakes? Is "All the Whey" really as good as some of those guys say it is? I've never tried a protein shake before, but I'm thinking of trying one out. :d_smile:

I drink All The Whey protein shakes. I have the chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. In my opinion the taste is excellent. For the price, this stuff cannot be beat! They also ship quickly and have good customer service which is always a plus. :D

For now I am using the MRP type shakes, which are not as economical but to me they taste more like a real shake. I do use regular protein powder (ON Chocolate mint) in my oatmeal, however. :)

I'll probably switch over to using the more economical non MRP powder as soon as I can make a convincing thick shake out of one that doesn't involve cottage cheese or peanut butter. Have tried oatmeal, but I'm probably not doing it right.

In either case, the protein powders that I have tried taste just fine, although I haven't tried All the Whey yet.

that I love, but it's not thick at all. Very fruity tasting and thinner. I love the Pina Colada and apple flavors. I haven't tried All the Whey, but I am also a big fan of Lean Body and low-carb Lean body shakes. The peanut butter chocolate flavor and the vanilla ice cream are both pretty good. You should definitely try shakes if you are having trouble getting your protein grams into your diet.

I haven't tried All the Whey, but I use ON 100% Whey Protein. I use 1 cup of Diet V8 Splash and 1 scoop strawberry whey protein for my daily post workout meal. Tastes fruity! Next I think I'm going to try chocolate.

I haven't tried all the whey...but my brother keeps raving about it ...and says he will give me some to try so i don't have to buy it before i know! Anyways i will share some of my thoughts on protein shakes:

first of all i don't care for the ones that are all or mostly soy. Taste is not so good unless you like soy milk for instance....YUCK. i have also tried the GNC whey supplement and it tastes ok but does not mix well at all....all clumpy! I just bought some designer whey which is seemingly the best one i've had so far. But personally i don't really like the artificial flavoring anymore of most of the protein powders...i think with my diet i've lost some of my sweet teeth if you will. But i do like my ice cream which i mix it with so that i don't just have plain old whey drink.

I'm not sure exactly what your goals are but my roommate drinks Myoplex(correction! i had said metrx) shakes and i've tasted hers and they taste REALLY good! HAve lots of flavors many which include chocolate and its good trust me cuz i usually don't even like chocolate stuff. But the downfall is that they are like twice the calories of like designer, all they whey and many others....but for me it's def an option since i'm usually mixing with icecream anyways....so calorically i'm on par.

Anyways that was long winded ...hope you find something valuable in my blabber!

You should definitely try shakes if you are having trouble getting your protein grams into your diet.
I would recommend protein shakes to people who are having trouble getting enough protein intake too, but that's not likely.

From weight loss for all (http://www.weightlossforall.com/protein.htm):

It has been estimated that we need about 0.75 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. If you would like to roughly work out your own protein requirement first find out your weight in kilograms then multiply it by 0.75.

The figure would only be an approximate value and most people will find they regularly consume more than they require.

And from Protein, proteins and amino acids for health fitness. (http://healthfitness.com.au/diet/nutrition/protein-proteins.htm):

Beginners and even intermediate exercisers generally should not follow increased protein intake, being brainwashed by protein advertisements. The only way to build muscle is to stimulate it through exercise. Research shows that even on RDA of protein strength trainers built muscle as well as those on twice the amount (1). This is because the protein utilization increased in efficiency and exemplifies on how the body adapts to what is available.

This seems reasonable to me. For a woman 150 pounds (68 kg), she'd require about 51 g of protein per day. I found I've been eating about 80g, so, in my case, I decided that protein powder would just be extra calories that I don't need. If you're the type that would prefer a protein shake for breakfast than a bowl of oatmeal, then go for it, but don't be so quick to buy protein powder just because it sounds the "in" thing to do. I doubt it would help you lose weight, if that's your goal, and it would have minimal impact on muscle growth, unless you are a professional body builder.

I buy the Met-RX shakes just because they are so durn good and help me not go buy a box of cookies at Costco. Limiting myself to one a day is hard, but I do it. :)

As for the Met-RX calories vs. the Protein Powder calories, yes, the met-rx has more calories (also, since it's meant to be a meal replacement it has more vitamins and minerals as well). Of course, adding fruit, oatmeal, milk, etc to the PP also probably puts the calories up to the 240-250 of the met-rx. Protein powder + food will probably also be much cheaper, although I only buy MRP shakes on sale from my local Vitamin Shoppe.

All that said, of course it's much better to eat 'real food' whenever possible. The shakes to me are like 'treats'. :)

I use protein shakes but not the brands below as I can't buy them where I live. I currently drink "Sculpt" shakes which are really yummy (especially chocolate); available in Australia and NZ. I'm going to try some Goliath's whey protein next which I've just bought which I've been told is great... made in Australia. :db:

I use All the Whey because it is cheap, good-tasting, mixes easily and indepedently lab tested for quality. I use a protein powder ( 2 to 2 1/2 scoops per day) because I am on a low carb diet (low fat does not work for me) and though I eat natural organic foods that I prepare myself mostly, there is a tendancy for my food plan to get high fat. So the supplement of the protein powder allows me to get to my desired calorie level and help keep the proportion of fat down.

But in the last month I have been dealing with a knee problem that has kept me from working out regularly and shot my moitivation to stay on my food plan all to hell. So I may not be a good example. But I have had success with my food plan overall as my weight is down from 190 lbs, taken off very slowly and without yo-yo weight and loss experiences.

I personally found I do much better with a high protein, low carb diet. For years when I got up to 190, I stayed there struglling with all the low fat high carb diets. Once I switched to high protein low carb, my weight slowly came off. I realized then that high protein-low carb was how I used to eat naturally before I went into the weight loss-weight gain spiral that started once I quit smoking in my late 20's. I was trying to lose the 10 pounds I gained form quiting smoking with the low fat-low protein approach, and over the course of 15 years ended up gaining 70 pounds.

Now I am in my mid 150's (though this last bout with my knee I gained about 5 pounds) and have been doing a steady but very slow decline the scale.

I think everyone's body is different and that each person has to find what works for them. So far I have found the protein blend of All the Whey helpful. but I have only been using it for a month and that is the period I gained weight. But I don't think it was because of that. It was because I was drowning my discouragement over not being able to exercise in eating cookies and cake and ice cream instead of proper food. I believe that the protein powder actually helped m from gaining more.

But now I seem to be able to work out again regualrly, so I am back on my food plan and we'll see how the protein powder works.

(I used to eat Atkins Bars and found that I was gaining weight on them even though I stayed within my calorie limits. I think it was because they were so high in fat. I stopped eating them and the couple of pound gainsed went away. I tried the protein powder because it does nto have fat and has the convenience of the bars when I do not have time to eat or not in the mood for solid food.)
