I am on the road to starting a serious fat loss program. My problem is that I am currently in limbo job-wise and could be moving very shortly, so I don't want to invest in any large equipment or a binding gym membership. I would like to have a solid routine using body weight exercises and dumbbells (and possibly other inexpensive, portable equipment). Anyone have suggestions or sources I could check out?

There's a site out there that professes a method called CrossFit (www.Crossfit.com). It emphasizes body-weight and "real-world" strength building exercises.

The have videos that show you how to do such things as:
Hand-stand push-ups
dips
squats/cleans
pull-ups
etc.

I think about 3/5 of their exercizes don't require any weight equipment, and about 1/5 can be done with something as simple as a medicine ball or other heavy object.

I haven't tried any of their "Work out of the Day (WOD)" yet, but I have tried a hand-stand push-up, and if you can do as many as they want you to do per exercise session you'll probably be quite strong.

I fail to see how a handstand pushup is a "real world" strength builder. I don't often kick up against a wall at work and do pushups. :p

I haven't done Cross Fit long enough nor do I know enough about it adequately defend it against criticism; but a hand-stand push-up is probably a half-decent way to work the shoulder muscles without needing weights.

There are foldable dumbbell benches out there fairly cheap and most exercises done with a barbell can be replaced with dumbbells. If a bench is too large maybe one of the aerobic steps could be used for bench presses and a few other exercises or work the chest with pressups as a last resort just wont as much of a gain.

It is a good workout. I can crank out 30 or so before I fall on the floor. I just fail to see how it fits in with their philosophy of real world application :D I think it works triceps out too.
