I made a mistake when I bought 2 cap barbell 110 pound sets. I think your best option would be buying a 300 lb. set ($100-150, usually) and if you find it necessary, some extra 10s, 5s, and 2.5s.

Sell the elyptical and make room.
Buy a power rack (used is fine) so you can bench and squat, deadlift and press-- in saftey.
ANy barbell set will work. Olympic weights will work better, but any weights will do.
GOt $300? Buy a powertec lat machine. THis will serve you more than a bench and the quality is great.

THis place offers free shipping on POWERTEC stuff.

Really broke? Just buy dumbbells. You can do quite a lot with JUST good old dumbbells. ONce when I had nothing, I used only db's for months and got in good shape. You can as well.
