View Full Version : Blood Pressure Monitor
garthus Thu, September 2nd, 2004, 12:41 PM Ok.. So I just moved to a new area and have joined a new gym. I had my first initial meeting this week to check me out really and try and devise a program for me.
AS i sat down at the end the instructor tried to take my blood pressure with one of those automatic machines (im sure you know the type - strap around your arm and then press a button inflate read b lood pressure and heart rate)
So well i wait and wait, the thing pumps up then gradually deflates to try and take my reading. It gives ERR, the guy looks bemused and says hmmm thats not happened before tries again, nothing tries again, nothing then tries it on himself it works.
Then got someone else to try on my and still ERR, so after all that, the question is - does anyone know why this is happening? Im curious thats all. I also tried it with one my parents have back home and it gave an error.
I was hoping to say to the instructor look how fit I am and how good my resting pulse rate is and ... nothing.
Maybe im some kind of superhuman but im sure im not, has anyone else experienced this?

Either the batteries are no good, the tube that connects the cuff to the monitor wasn't secure, or he left it to loose on your arm when he tried it. If it isn't one of those things, then I am afraid you are dead.
kingink Fri, September 10th, 2004, 02:46 PM if you're a big guy with arms bigger than 14", the cuff was probably too small. sphygmomanometers and digital bp cuffs, need to be the right size or you'll get misleading data. the bp comes out too high. i have three different cuffs for taking bp at work, infant, regular, and large. On some of our larger clients, I have to take the bp on their forearm.
KirkF Sat, September 11th, 2004, 10:44 AM You could have a very faint blood pressure. One that is difficult to read on the machine.
As something of a test, if you hold your arm with your palm up and draw a straight line from your pinky finger up your arm to the crease at your elbow, you should be able to feel a pulse. Can you feel one there? If it's difficult to feel then the machine might not be able to detect it up further up your arm either.
You should have someone check your blood pressure the old fashion way with a stethescope and give you an opinion on how difficult it is to read and also what it is. Either that or try a different machine.

Emilio Sat, September 11th, 2004, 10:55 PM just wanted to let you know the link works and lets you fill out a form but about a week later you get a nice e-mail telling you that they are all out of hb monitors but thanks for trying. No biggie though.. On a side note.. who makes a good decently priced bp monitor? Are those chest strap ones any good?
thanks
Emilio
RichLockyer Sun, September 12th, 2004, 12:41 AM I used a chest strap type and had problems with the battery in the strap going after a month. The only other problem I had was if someone else was nearby with another one, the reading could go nuts.
I'm now using the Mioplex. It is very accurate, but it does require you to touch the contacts to activate it and get a reading.
Emilio Sun, September 12th, 2004, 03:21 AM do you have a link to the mioplex?
thanks,
Emilio

Mine is the Mio Shape. The first link is about $20 cheaper, and $30 cheaper than that if you can handle a red band :)
I honestly can't remember where I actually bought mine, but I think it was Healthchecksystems.
