:( Well, it looks like I may be getting a cold :( Sneezing, scratchy throat and a runny nose...I don't "feel" sick yet and hopefully I won't...I am just preparing for the worst!

Tomorrow I am supposed to be doing my cardio and I really don't want to miss it...I am afraid if I miss a few workouts it will be that much harder to get back into my routine (history has definitely proven this!)

Does a cold necessarily mean no work outs? If I feel up to 30 minutes is it a bad idea to go ahead and do it?....Maybe I will sweat out all the virus :tu: ;)

i had a head cold last week and i kept up my routine (though it was very difficult to do, i felt like hell!). i actually think that my cold went away faster than it normally does. i was only sick for about 4 days as opposed to 2 weeks which is the norm for me when i get a head cold. i do attribute this to healthier eating and regular exercise.

IMO if you feel OK to continue, then go for it (i would never suggest that someone with a bad case of stomache flu get up and run lol).

im not sure how many people around here use 'natural' medicine, but i use licorice tea with a teaspoon of honey for colds, it works like a charm and prevents coughing/sore throat.

Well, I went and did 35 minutes of cardio this morning and didn't feel too bad, but now I want to die!!!
I can't breathe through my nose and all I want to do is go to bed. Tomorrow is my spinning class....If I don't feel better I don't think that is going to happen!

Yikes guys.. where's your multivitamins? I haven't picked up anything too bad since. Might wanna consider some extra vitamin C as well.

I wouldn't recommend doing any exercise on a cold, especially cardio. A lotta things floating around that could make its way into your system :(

I haven't had a cold in about 2 years....so I guess I was due one. I do take a multivitamin every day. I think I am a bit too stressed out these days and this is my body telling me to RELAX!

If I don't feel a LOT better, I don't think I will be heading into the gym tomorrow.

I'd say you should rest. I don't know what exercise can do for a cold (I have read that it can be good for it), but rest has always been the way to go as far as doctors are concerned and it hasn't been debunked yet, to my knowledge. I figure, Exercise when you're healthy so that your body will be more capable of fighting illness when you can't. My logic is that the body needs as many resources as possible to fight the virus, exercise might have it diverting 'reinforcements' to other bodily tasks... but that's just my little theory based off of the classic 'fever is caused by your body raising it's temperature to attack the foreign organisms'.

When in doubt, go with your gut and do what feels good.

As for what I do when I get a head cold, this is going to sound gross but it relieves the inability to breathe for awhile: take a hot shower or a steam. Blow nose. It loosens all of that snot right up. Plus, as it's been said, drink tea. Plenty of good ones out there. Mint, chamomile, green, etc.

 Or onion? My grandmother used to eat whole raw onions on a regular basis to ward off colds. Supposedly it worked, but who knows if it was that or something else.

I prefer her cure to her preventative methods: hot wine.

Bicycling wisdom says that if your "problems" are only above your neck, you can ride (work out), if you have issues below the neck, you should rest.

So a stuffy nose is ok to ride with, fever is not.

Got it!....But what about a cough? Would that be considered in the chest or in the throat?

Either way, I don't think I can handle going to the gym today :( I feel too yucky

I saw my nutritionist yesterday and I happened to think of this thread so I asked her. She said with a cold its ok to work out not too hard. But if you have a flu or anything with fever then definitley rest.

As far as the chest thing, remember if you're coughing up a greenish phlegm, you have an infection and should get antibiotics (yellowish phlegm is normal)

Personally, i cant work out when im feeling like crap. ANd the more I rest the faster it seems to go. And also taking about 2-3000 mg of vitamin c daily helps too.

Thanks Girl!

I didn't make it to the gym yesterday...I was feeling too icky, but I did manage to get 20 minutes in today and fully expect to be back to normal tomorrow.

Phlegmy stuff is still yellow so no need to run to the doctor yet. Hopefully all this clean living will get me back to normal in no time!

Yep! There seem to be a lot of us here  I know I found this place from an article in the Austin Fitness Weekly mag. They did a piece on personal weightloss websites and John Stone Fitness was mentioned along with a few others....I thought I would check it out and read some helpful and friendly posts and decided to stay a while!

Are you a student here (in Austin, I mean)?

Arrrrrrhhhhhh,
Am i the only one that wants people with viruses to stay the hell out of the gym. Ater exercise your immmune system is at its lowest so you infect others easier and catch additional bugs easier. I near never get colds cant remember the last but i have family members that catch cold quite easily. They catch them often when they use the gym and not when they do their exercise elsewhere.

I did take the day off! And I passed the cold onto my brother and both of my grandparents....I feel pretty guilty about it too! So next time I will definitely keep to myself!
