There are hundreds of thousands of forums out there. A forum just starting out has no "hook" to get people to come, you need an outstanding website that people want to visit. An E/N site, for example, usually will not cut it because there are so many of them and each one has, for the most part, the same content. John's site on the other hand had a relatively unique idea: to show all the aspects of his transformation and post daily pictures.
After you have an amazing website, you need a large fan base and a real reason to gather them in one place for interaction. For example, the reason these forums became popular was that people wanted to make their own transformations and this is a good way to get help and see what other people are doing.
And finally your forum needs a snazzy layout. No one wants to look at the design that comes with it, everyone has seen it, and it makes your forum look "new." A good forum looks established, whether or not it has had a lot of traffic.
Though it's often done, I think advertising your forum on another forum is a faux pas. No matter how you cut it, it's a type of spam. If you worked at McDonalds, you wouldn't and couldn't go into Burger King and post advertisements.

I read bits and peices of your post, didnt really derive much from it cept that I was spamming the board, and in my post I stated that if it wasnt cool, then just delete the post.

Am I stupid, or did you edit out the part where you said it's okay to delete the post? I can't find it...

I know of a few successful forums in existence, and they can all be classified into three types. One type was created after the parent website became successful (examples: John Stone Fitness, Something Awful). Another type was created when "regulars" broke off from an already successful forum and created a splinter forum. (http://www.autoadmit.com -- college admissions, if anyone is interested). The final type is that it is the oldest forum for its niche.
Unfortunately, your forum fits into none of these categories.
