Sure. You can try chicken, tuna, eggs, turkey, etc. There is nothing magical about a protein shake. You will not get better results because of them. They are meant to be a supplement to "real" sources of protein.

Knubb August 17th, 2004, 02:56 PM Protein shakes aren't anything magical. Some people seem to believe they are though, I don't. If you eat something else that contains the same amount of proteins and other stuff you would get from the shake, you'll get the same results.
Edit: Seems like txitalian took the words out of my mouth...
Hai_Tran August 18th, 2004, 01:46 PM Okay... For canned tuna they tell me how much servings and how much protein it has.. but how much protein is in a broiled chicken? its skinless and i only eat the chicken breast.. So does anyone know how to calculate the Protein/carbs/fats in chicken? thanks.

hars August 18th, 2004, 03:45 PM i thought the whole deal with protein shakes was the fact that it is the quickest way to get protein into your body after a workout.
Not magical, but if you wanted the quickest and best possible results then they are the way to go.
I sup with protein shakes and dextrose/maltodextrin after a workout and they taste great!
Knubb August 18th, 2004, 04:40 PM The quickest way to make sure you have protein in your body after a workout is to eat it before the workout.
My beliefs are that if you make sure your diet is functional, there is nothing to gain from taking protein shakes, other than that it might be convenient.
hobowitharolex August 18th, 2004, 04:57 PM heres the lowdown on post workout nutrition
after working out your livers glycogen is depleted. This means youbody is in a catabolic state which means your muscle will break down. Muscles build during rest but working out gives them the stimulus for growth. Carbs replenish glycogen restoring you to an anabolic state. Simple carbs also cause an insulin spike. When your insulin levels are high your body absorbs nutrients much more efficently than when insulin is low. The reason to have protien post workout is to take advantage of your insulin spike. The advantage of whey protien over a meat or other type of protien is it absorbs faster. When your insulin levels normalize your meat protien wont have been able to digest and take advantage of the insulin spike. You do not need to take protien post workout, but you might as well take advantage of being able to very efficently.

Actually, protein synthesis (hypertrophy/muscle gain) is not a phenomenon that is in any way accelerated after your training. More happens during your recovery as a response to training. The only need for protein is simply to replace the branched-chain amino acids that were burned for energy during the session, otherwise they will not be available for recovery. The post-workout shake is far more important for glycogen replenishment - in other words, it is the quality of carbs after a workout, because there is a window of opportunity to replenish the energy you burned within your muscles.
No, protein shakes are not magical. If you have an issue with taste, look into Muscle Provider from Beverly International. For a meal replacement, try Ultra Size. These are the best tasting shakes hands down I have ever tried, and many people agree. Taste is an individual thing, but you also get the side effect of high quality protein that is a mix of various types instead of an unbalanced focus on just whey or casein like other companies try to do.

dtricome October 7th, 2004, 03:05 AM Hi,
I'm sorry for the delay, but in case your interested...
Concerning taste, a non-caloric sweetener can be added. Better yet, an unflavored protein can be mixed with anything like Crystal Light or Gatorade.
A lot of athletes and especially bodybuilders can't do without a protein supplement throughout the day.
Without knowing what you are trying to accomplish, here's a couple of general rules:
Protein supplements can be used to diet and increase muscle. Whey protein makes you feel full. Dieters and people wanting to build muscle take protein periodically throughout the day.
After a workout, take a PWO shake for the best results.
